No matter which option I choose, I can't boot to any Safe Mode. I get to the Options screen and I can select any option I want but they all end the same way, with this message:

    MESSAGE

    MODE NOT SUPPORTED

    H: 35.4KHZ V: 86.6 HZ

    My monitor is a Proview PTS06A5 set at 1028 X 768, True Colour, 70Hertz.

Question: How can I boot in safe mode or why can't I boot in Safe Mode?

This looks like a monitor failure, can you try it on another computer or try your computer with another monitor?

    Edit:

Does a normal boot work ok?

Also try hitting F8 on startup and selecting Las Known Good Configuration and then try selecting Safe Mode. Lets make sure that its a system problem and not a monitor issue.

V: 86.6 HZ is way higher than a 70hz monitor can handle.

Press F8 on system startup and select "VGA Mode" from the list.
This should start your machine in 800x600 16 colours 60hz. After startup you can set it back to the desired resolution and refresh rate with the saftey of the 15sec timer.

Sorry, but none of those worked.
    A normal boot works fine.
KGC works but Safe Mode doesn't work afterwards.
It will not start in VGA Mode. All I get are rainbow colours straight across the screen.
I tried an sfc /scannow and some files could not be copied eg.

]. This file is necessary to maintain system stability.

Edit: Ran sfc /scannow again and it finished with no problems.

Its very strange that you say it works in normal mode but not safe mode.

My first instincts would be to say that the video card is faulty from the rainbow colour description, but the fact that it starts in normal mode kinda kills the theory.

I do think there is some kinda video driver issue because "vga mode" starts windows normally with your normal video driver just at a lower resolution. Try to uninstall your video card drivers entirely and download the latest ones from the manufacturer's website.

Lipe123: It's onboard video, but I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers .....with no change (SiS 650_651_M650_M652_740)

hawk22: Yes, that was one of the first things I tried, but I have no trouble getting to the page for Safe Mode, it's after that when I receive that message.

BTW: The last thing that loads is giveio.sys , so I suppose whatever comes after that is what it's hanging on.

Thanks for all the ideas lads and keep them coming.:)

It appears that 'giveio.sys' is not a Windows file, it appears to belong to software related to 'card readers'. Run 'giveio.sys' through Google and you will find the info.

Well, I Googled giveio.sys and it seems it's installed with Speedfan among others so that they can read temps.etc.
But I don't think it has anything to do with my problem because that file loads OK. It's whatever comes after it that refuses to load. At least, that's the way I see it.:)

tried doing a repair install of windows?

Insert the windows CD and start the computer from it, press enter to install windows, press F8 to accept the license, and then you should be able to press "R" to repair the current install.

    Lipe123,
Would you believe it, I just tried that a couple of hours ago. Everything went well for the first half of it but when it reboots and is installing Windows, up comes the same warning once again. It doesn't seem to be working in the background but I have no way of knowing for sure except the light on the front doesn't flash at all. So I press the reset button and it boots past the POST screen to a blue screen saying Setup is Restarting....... But no matter how long I leave it that's what happens when I reboot it.

Luckily, I had cloned my C drive using XXClone, so I was able to get back into that. But no change on the warning problem. So I re-cloned my C drive again which seemed to go perfectly and I now have two drives I can boot to but I'm not getting any nearer to booting into Safe Mode.

The reason I want to be able to boot into Safe Mode is I have XP Home and that's the only way to get to the real Administrator account plus I like to run some of my Anti-Spyware programmes in Safe Mode from time to time.
