Just installed WindowsXP, and am connected to internet via DSL.
When in either Internet Explorer or Outlook Express, and I click on File>Send>.....the option to send "link by email' is closed (or not highlighted). Similarly, the option to send 'page by email' is not highlighted. The only option available is 'shortcut to desktop'.

What do I need to do to allow links to be sent by email?

I tried copying a url, then pasting it into an email as an attachment but OE stripped it out as 'malicious' (I think).

    1. First open OE, go to tools, accounts, mail tab. Highlight your account, then click "set as default ".
    2. Then open IE, tools, internet options, programs, and select OE for internet mail.
    3. And if these dont work. Try repairing IE via the control panel, add/remove programs, highlight IE, click add/remove, then select repair IE. Post back good or bad.

    Hi doubleu
    Welcome to the boards!
    Two things to check:
    In Outlook Express:
You might try Going to Tools / Options / Security

Untick Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. Or sort through the ones you don't want Outlook Express to filter for you?

Then open a web browser......and go to tools......internet options....then the programs tab, and ensure you have your email set to Outlook Express.

Then open IE, tools, internet options, programs, and select OE for internet mail.

Thanks to all for your replies. I've tried everything but the suggestion above is one I can't seem to make happen. When I get to 'programs' , the category 'Email' is blank and I can't put anything in it. When I click on the space where I'd like to put 'Outlook Express' a blue mask appears. Its impossible to write anything in that space.

What now? I've done everything else suggested.

Close all programs, click on start, run and type this..

From the Run line (if the Outlook Express and Internet Options methods do not register Outlook Express as the default e-mail program, use this method):
Type the following line, including the quotation marks, where drive is the letter of the drive in which Outlook Express is installed, and then click OK:
    " drive:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe" /reg

Then reboot and try. Post back good or bad.

I tried this three times and it still doesn't fix the problem.

By the way, when I ran this, nothing happened...that is, no files opened or anything...the 'run box' just disappeared. Is that what you were expecting to happen?

Earlier you wrote: Try repairing IE via the control panel, add/remove programs, highlight IE, click add/remove, then select repair IE.

I tried this but I can not find IE after clicking the 'add/remove programs' icon. My statement doesn't make any sense, not even to me, but truthfully, IE is not listed as a program there.

There's another thing....in control panel>add/remove programs>set program access and defaults>Choose a configuration......my configuration says 'custom', and under Web Browser it lists I.E. but under 'Email Program' it says: use my current email program. I don't know why this is a custom configuration....and I don't know why it says to use my current email program (which happens to be OE anyway). However, I can't seem to restore the configuration to 'Microsoft'....done everyything I can think of to make it 'Microsoft' to no avail. Do you suppose that's my problem?

Brett's link was the next step. Edit the registry. Try repairing IE via start, programs, accessories, system tools, system info. When that window opens, click on tools, then "repair IE.

Wow....finally got it working thanks to your brilliant knowledge.
And only after editing the Registry as the final hope.

I very much appreciate your help on this.

Just curious, but how did you ever find this on Microsofts support site?

Thanks for posting back. Yes, MS search feature is very poor. I recall this being discussed here before. I'll let Brett answer for his search..
