DVD vs CD discs

Sometimes I burn music discs. Sometimes I create and burn videos. Can I use DVD discs for both purposes?

Short answer is Yes...The cost for DVD's have dropped over time. I use DVD's for everything. Now the only problem with that is if you burn a DVD it can "only" be viewed or played in a DVD player where the CD's that you "burnt" can be viewed and played on both a CD and a DVD.

Yes and no

For audio CD's you will need blank CD's, for MP3's you could use DVD's but they won't work on CD Players. DVD players may (or may not work) and computer DVD ROM players are likely to work (depending mainly on age).

For Video, you could use MP4 or Video CD's. For MP4's computer CDROMS should work (again depending on age) VCD players (a rare breed) may work and most modern DVD players will work. For VCD's it's much the same.

Basically although CD's and DVD's look the same they are entirely different, a lot depends on what you want to play the discs on.

Your question is just too generic to give definite answers, the above is the best I can offer.

More specifics to my question re CDs and DVDs

Wildfire and Kent, thank you for responding, but I need to be more specific. Once in a while I burn a music cd, but I make slide shows with music, captions, etc. with Roxio more often, and I like to show them on our TV. Occasionally, I make copies of my shows for friends who may have gone with us on a trip, and they like to view them on their TV.

I've always used CD-R discs before, but Costco has a sale on DVD-R discs these days (buy the first 100 and get the second 100 free), and I'm wondering if I could use those discs, instead.

Hi Alice,

Yes, if the CD-R's worked for your slide shows in the past then DVD-R's should work but again I'll stress your milage will vary depending on which DVD player you/your friends are using. Most will work but some won't. This is a limitation of the playing hardware not the recording hardware.

And will I be able to use the DVD-R discs to burn music CDs, also, Wildfire?

No, you can put Music (in the form of MP3's etc) on DVD's but using a DVD to create an Audio CD type disc will not work

Ok, thanks, but this brings up another question: I've made DVD slide shows on CD disks --- and sent copies to my friends in New Zealand --- and they never can play them on their TV, only on their computer. Do you know why that is?

Your friends DVD is maybe not up to the job, if you can post the model number there may be a way to update the firmware, or at least confirm that is the problem.

I'll add that the problem could simply be a matter of the type of DVD Disc, most players nowadays will play anything but some older models may only work with only +R or only -R and adding RW discs causes additional issues.

If you can find out from your friend the make/model of the DVD player then we should be able to determine the type of disc with most likliehood of success.

 

DVD probably an English model

Well, my friend lives in New Zealand, Wildfire, so his DVD player is no doubt an English model, which probably won't help us. Actually, I was there just a few weeks ago, and I tried to play one of my shows on his TV, thinking he was just doing something wrong --- should have known better --- and of course I had no luck. I'll ask him for his model number next time we chat on Skype, but I don't have a lot of hope that we'll be able to solve this one.

Erm, I don't know if you've noticed but Scotland isn't that far away from England But yes as far as ID'ing the model it doesn't help.

LOL, I hadn't noticed you live in Scotland! Six years ago, our Kiwi friends and we spent 3 months in Europe and the British Isles, including, of course, Scotland, and I loved Scotland. We even got to see a tatoo at Edinburgh Castle --- great fun. Where do you live in Scotland?
