I have windows xp I think with service pack 2, and I just restored my computer about a month and a half ago with my recovery cds, and now windows movie maker will not work correctly. Everytime I open it and put a video, or a picture, or music in it it freezes saying a problem was encoutered. The same thing happens when I try to save a video I made or cut in there, and when I add the music to the storyboard timeline thing. How can I fix this?

Check Windows Event Viewer Application log for errors relating to movie maker.

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

I see a lot of different errors in "Application ", and in "System ". I will try to post a few since I am not sure what I am looking for. Also, thank you so much for replying so quickly to help me. ^_^

    Those three came from applications.

And these two came from systems. What do I do?

ffdshow.ax and ff_acm.acm is codecs, the reason why your movie maker crashes could be because the codec crashes and then causes wmm to crash.

Uninstall all the codec packs you have on your machine and get something like cccp (combined comunity codec pack) to avoid having conflicting versions of codecs from various individual installs.

I'm not sure how to go about doing that or where to get the CCCP from. Would you mind posting it here please? I am sorry if that is too bothersome. Thanks for posting!

Thanks pete, I tried to find a download link in those google links provided but I couldn't, and I tried following the instructions to reinstall but the moviemk.inf file or whatever it's called is nowhere on my computer. I searched for it manually and through the "search" and "run" but only moviemk.pnf was there and it is not an application/install file. Could you post a direct download link or something? I don't have an xp cd to extract it off either. I don't mean to be a pain, I'm sorry if this is asking too much, and thank you for all of your help.

the file is located at .....

    C:\WINDOWS\inf\moviemk.inf

It is a hidden file - Tools > Folder Options > View - Show Hidden files and Folders.

Unless you included Hidden Files and Folders in your search it would not have shown up.
We are here to help and nothing is too much :)

Hi PeteC, thanks so much for your kindness. I followed your instructions, and screenied it for you. This is the only moviemk. files in inf. I added hidden files and folders.

Perhaps it is because I don't have an actual xp cd. :(

No, it's because you have the default settings for Windows Explorer :) Extensions for known file types are hidden - moviemk in your screenshot is moviemk.inf - inf is a known file type.

Tools > Folder Options > View and uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types' and all will be revealed :)

Okay I'm back, lol. I seen it in there and when I right clicked and clicked install it said I needed moviemk.exe for windows xp server pack 2 or something. I have the screenie.

    http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c157/tasukilover/prob-1.jpg

I searched moviemk.exe on my search, and three came up: One in program files, one in software distiburtion, and one in regristration or something similar to that. I used the one in software distribution but it didn't fix the problem.
