basic problem: I install the OS by booting to cdrom with no problem. Once the machine boots to the operating system the CD rom is not accessable. Does not show in device manager nor can it be identified in DOS mode. Tried new cables, new cd rom and still no luck. Please help if you can... ty in advance.

If your CD drive has the jumper set to Cable Select, you might want to change it.

I know it is supposed to be the "modern" way but I've heard that some systems and some drives refuse to work this way.

understand your point completely, I changed the jumpers over to master from cs early in the process. Even tried installing front end drivers for the cd rom to no avail. I just dont understand how it can boot to a cd, install an operating system and then just totaly ignore the cd once the system is up. Actually I think think the real issue here is that I just dont want to format and do a clean install because all the **** this lady has on her system. She is convinced that the purple bastard ape and webshots MUST be installed before the system can run. *sigh*

    edit for spelling atrocities

Make sure that she doesn't have any kind of CD read/write external installed previously, those drivers always mess up the universal drivers from W2k.

    re Win2k CD problems

I suffered the same on an upgrade to Win2K. Solved by going into BIOS and reactivating CD settings there. As part of this I was forced to use a Win98 Start floppy as Win2k ignored the F key approach to accessing BIOS. Incidentally, Win2K recognised the 2 UNLISTED drives in the machine. good luck!

Have a look at Nanashi's thread of Sep 7th, "Can't find CD Drive ".
