    Hi all,

I signed up for Bellsouth DSL a few days ago, and I am supposed to be connected on the 6th of January - plus my CD is to arrive on the same day too.

I hear that the CD has needless programs, and bloatware that I don't want to install. Is there a way bypass these resource hogging apps without affecting my connection and registration?

    Thanks.

You don't need the software at all. Just connect to the router, open up IE and go to 192.168.1.254 and configure the modem. Your done.

    Thanks!

    I don't have a router yet - just a dsl modem.

Edit: Is it normal to have two network icons in the tray? One for dsl, and one for a LAN? Seems that I can't have one without the other.

How does the modem connect to your PC: USB or Network cable?

    RJ-45 ethernet cable.

The CD came in today, but I am told that service does not officially start until 1-6-09 @ 6:00PM. However, I can pull up the Bellsouth home page now, but I can't get much beyond that. Nor do I see a registration page either.

    What about registration?

I did see a page where it looks the modem might have been registered, but don't I have to key-in a code on a special registration site to get past the home page?

I meant to say just connect to the modem. No router involved.

Your user name will be youremailaddress@bellsouth.net
Your password will be your 10 digit phone number.

if that doesnt work then it's your 7 digit phone number.

    No go.

Not sure what's going on here.

Maybe I'll need the CD after all. :(

James, plug the modem into the wall outlet, once the DSL is active the dsl light on the modem will light up and it will load its default configuration. When the DSL light comes on just go to the IP that scott gave you and configure your settings, enter your bellsouth.net e-mail address and the 7-digit phone number for the DSL line. this should be all you need to do.

No you do not need the cd.

Technically, others at AT&T or BellSouth will tell you its midnight and if you want any advanced support (DSG group), it will not be available until after this time.

It would probably be helpful if you could advise re: level of service (1.5MBs, 3.0MBs or 6.0MBs) and current modem type (Alcatel, Westell, Two Wire, Motorola or Netopia) as all have some unique differences and some are incompatable with certain levels of DSL service. If you are going to 6.0MBs service, it requires both central office switch and physically, an adjustment at the slick serving your line.

Scott is right on the money though - there is no need for BS software.

You should also confirm your setup as the presence of a router for multiple computer connections will alter how each of these (previously referenced) modems should be setup.

    Good Luck

    ;)

Yes, I managed to make that far, plus I signed in using my temporary ID (attreg@att.net) & password (attreg) - at least that's what I was told to use over the phone. That enabled me to go here: http://my.att.net/ but that is as far as I could go...not even the ads would download, lol.

Should I have picked out a permanent ID, and then used my phone number for the password instead of the temporary one I was given?

    Edit:
Here is what the Bellsouth page looks like...

Fastaccess dsl lite. (It's now called AT&T dsl instead of Bellsouth.)

Westell Wirespeed 2100 modem using ethernet cable. No router just yet.

    Done!

Called AT&T to ask about this problem, and the tech lady instructed me how to opt out of the fluff software - however, I did notice a yahoo download manager installed in my "Add - Remove" programs section.

Hopefully, all is well now, but any more input is welcome since I am new to broadband.

So you did use the CD?
Well now more than likely your PC is doing the PPOE authentication instead of the Modem. That will be an issue when you add a router. But I guess we will cross that bridge when we get to it.

No, I didn't use the CD, but I did enter an address in IE and was taken to a registration page.

PPOE - (Point to point protocol over ethernet?) Is that where my problems started? I examined the properties box, and it is set up for that.

I used the network connection wizard to set up the modem according to this link...

    http://support.att.net/bellsouth/as...sprt_cid=32924220-0de1-43ad-802b-2a5e1f26b3b8

Funny - the broadband icon in my tray lists my speed at 100Mbps, but in truth, it is not exceeding the dsl lite standard that I signed up for.

That is the connection speed between your modem and your PC. Independent of your connection speed with the internet.

So you recommend that I go ahead configure my modem, according to the above link, in case I decide to add a router later?

Not a big deal now. We can let the router do it instead of the PC when you add one.
