    Hi there,
My EPSON CX5500 won't print, as one colour called 'cyan' is out....As I want to print in black and white, which is full, does anyone have any trouble-shooting tips so that I can print tonight please?
The only option that I can see is a long, long trip to the only place in town where I can get this ink cheaply/ and I can ill afford it!
Does anybody have any tips please? So far the status is 'printing/ but it seems to have stalled at 12/22 pages on a long assignment for university, which I am keen to submit tomorrow instead of running around buying ink...
    I don't even need cyan for B & W printing, do I?
    ;)Cheers Jewels is a gem

This is not a problem - its a feature. If one of the cartridges is empty, the printer just stops printing even if that colour is not required. This feature helps Epson more than the user :D

Short of installing a new cartridge, I don't know any way around it.

Interested in finding if it could be done otherwise.

I think you're out of luck - generally Epson printers, may be others - I have only experience of Epson photo printers - will do nothing if a cartridge is empty.
I don't know about your printer, but on the Epson R2400 printing mono prints light cyan and light magenta are used in conjunction with the 3 black inks and the occasional squirt of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow to keep those nozzles clear. I rarely use that printer for text, but I have a continuous inking system as opposed to cartridges.

Does your University not have printing facilities ? - mine had copying facilities, but that was 49 years ago

    Pete,

Is continuous inking system ok ? I also have Epson CX5500 & I have spent more for cartridges than the printer itself in last 1 year.

I can only speak of my own experience and that of my colleagues wrt continuous inking systems - I have had no issues and have found it to be very cost effective.

If there is a continuous inking system available for the CX550 I would consider it - the key factor is the quality/design of the conversion which is difficult to evaluate except by searching Google for user reviews.

Hi Pete, rsinfo, Pete since we are talking about Continuos Inking Systems and you are using it, I have been looking at them for a long time, and there is no question about the cost of printing the only thing that has held me back so far has been photo quality printing as this is the main reason for me. I use a Canon Pixma 4200 and Everest have a continuos inking system for this printer at $AU 120.-
In your opinion would you say you get photo quality??
At one stage I used to use Generic Inks but I had to stop because the color was just way out so I went back to Canon Ink and they cost more than liquid gold.

rsinfo Everest, do not make a system for the Epson CX550

I guess this is the system you are looking at .....

    http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=28681

Not a lot of info on the inks, but I suggest that you would get photo quality - most of that is down to the printer and paper of course. As to colour - no way of knowing without seeing :)

On my system - Epson R2400 using Permajet ink (Epson equivalent K3 inkset, pigment not dye), a calibrated monitor and bespoke paper profiles I see no colour differences between Epson/Permajet inks.

The essence of getting the same colour on the paper as you see on the screen is monitor calibration and the use of paper profiles - if you want to know more PM me with an email address and I'll send you an article I wrote recently on the subject.

    Hi there,
When I can get it working, the photo quality on EPSON CX5500 is excellent - I had a couple of photos for my inlaws showing how much my niece looks loke me in a particular photo, and the photos were extremely clear and with good resolution. My complaint is that the printer is temperamental!

As Pete and rsinfo have pointed out and I have to agree with it 100% as my Canon does the same, even if I don't print any color the printer is still using color ink, unfortunately this is how the cookie crumbles.
Don't know where about in Austr. you live but Cartridge World would be about the cheapest generic ink supply for your printer.

    cheap Epson ink!

    Hi there,
I'll give Cartridge World a call tomorrow - Thanx!
I've found that 'Big W' have cheaper inks than any computer warehouses so far.....which I discovered by accident when looking for a computer ink supplier at a large shopping mall........ But if they make me spend a whole day playing with a temperamental printer (On my mobile to Epson for ages/ on dial up/ at a cost of c.$75 from my $120 per month mobile account limit for the $29 fee!)........Or is it co-incidence?
I wonder whether it's all worth it..... Or was it the resulting paper jam which was subsequently a problem....
Nett cost was c.$28 c.f. c.$70 from Tandy for the complete set of colours/ But all things considered/ WAS IT REALLY A SAVING?......anyway, I've got it all working brilliantly now, after spending the best part of a day trying to print..... got there in the END!
    Cheers Jewels is a gem

PS: It may be unrelated, but joining the EPSON CLUB may also have helped/ As they offer a free faster print download when you join up..........in exchange for some data such as your Email address...........Seemed to help me!..... computer promptly started printing after I joined up!....................
