I have attached a Buffalo ministation external hard drive via USB.
I follow the Windows Help instructions for creating a partition (both ways, the Windows interface and the command line method) but Windows stubbornly to create a partition. Help, anyone?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

I suspect that the Buffalo came with a single partition already created - this is the general situation. If that is the case Windows cannot be used to split that partition into 2 or more.

Check out the drive in Disk Management .....

    Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc > Enter

If you see a single partition on the drive the only way of creating other (smaller) partitions is to right click on the drive in Disk Management > Delete Partition. Note that this will delete any data on the drive.

The disk space should then be seen as Unallocated. Right click in the unallocated spave > Create partition and follow the wizard through. Select the size you require for the first partition - when completed Disk Management will show the new partition and the remainder of the drive as unallocated. Repeat the procedure to create further partitions in the unallocated space.

I think that you must be logged in with administrator privileges to use disk management and format a drive. A limited user can't.
