The Adobe Flash player will not download. The reason given is that Firefox must be closed. The message is the same for Firefox and Internet Explorer. How do I overcome this problem?

IIRC you download an addon (ie flash player) and close the browser, run the Addon installer then reopen the browser.

Are you downloading then running or trying to run/open from the website?

After trying the download again, the message read that it was successfully installed. It wasn't. If I close the browser the install screen disappears as well. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for all your help. I was able to install Adobe Flash Player after changing Internet Explorer back to default browser.

FYI, you need 2 separate downloads, one Flash for IE and one Flash for FF. The IE download is an activeX control and the FF download is an exe installer. Just installing the IE Flash will not give Flash capability to FF. FF requires its own Flash install.

Thanks. You are right. I am still unable to download to Foxfire. The message reads that Foxfire must be closed, which precludes any possiblility of downloading Adobe Flash Player. Also, now the Foxfire is not working well. I am unable to find a way other than removing Foxfire. I do like it better than IE for the most part. Any help you can give will be deeply appreciated.

Perhaps uninstalling firefox ;) and then reinstalling would help.

It is not correct that Flash cannot be downloaded if Firefox is open. But it is correct that Flash cannot be installed if Firefox is open. The proper procedure is to download to an easy to find location, like the Desktop. Close Firefox, and go through the installation procedure. Give about 10 sec. after closing Firefox, before beginning the installation.
If you find anything about Flash, it will not be as an add-on, but rather as a plugin. Check the plugin by typing about: plugins in the address space.
Note that you should not have a space between : and plugins, but I have to do it this way, since some jokesters at this site caused it to be interpreted as a smiley( about:plugins)

In that case go to Advanced Reply and check under additional options - 'Disable smiles in text', resulting in ......

I had the selection on my other computer, and it did not work. Does it stay, or do you have to check the box every time?

Seems to work, but I don't understand why that "feature" is there. This is the only site which does this.

It is a nuisance, and there is no reason to have it.

    Flash Player uninstaller

In my experience, the Flash Player (or its upgrades) will not install properly on Firefox unless the Flash Player uninstaller is run first. Since I began using the uninstaller I haven't had a single problem with Flash Player upgrades.

Thank you for your response. The problem is now solved. The next thing I have to do is find out to take the question down from here.

    Thanks again.

I'd suggest that you leave the thread alone, but post your solution to the problem for the benefit of other readers.

    Installing flash player

Well--my problem is 'similar'---but involves a lot of the above.. FF keeps telling me to install Flash Player... Well---I have tried the Uninstall-- Install--of both downloads--- exe and Binary and keep getting the same message...

"Unable to install for lack of space...please free up 5000 mb and try again... "

Well--- I am in the Middle of a "complete" clean--and re-install of my Hard Drive
(225 Gig)-- and the Only thing on it is windows xp Home, e-mail program,Anti-Virus and Firefox 3.5.... (17.3 Gig) IE--is version 6..and Default

I am a --rookie---but willing to try anything.. I have e-mailed support in Adobe and FF---but have No response at this time.. Any Suggestions will be "tried' and advised as to how they worked....

    Thanks

    Rowdy.

I don't understand the reason for the problem. And, I see no reason to blame Firefox, as Adobe Flash is an external program, which is used
by Firefox, but not part of it. If you have IE, how is it doing to download Flash? The installation occurs after the download, and outside the browser. I believe that it is best to close the browser, after the download.

There was no problem on IE ... just FF. If you had read my earlier posting you would have seen that the problem has been resolved. I do appreciate your input. Thanks for your interest.
