    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

    First an advisory .....

Always remove an external drive by first disconnecting it using the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon which will appear in the Notification Area by the clock when the drive is connected and then powering it down and unplugging if required.

There may be a problem with the drive, but try a few tests first .....

Boot the computer with the external drive connected and powered up - any change?

Check that the drive is spinning up - likely and that the power supply is properly connected. I received the same message on one of my external drives recently - reseating the power cable resolved the problem.

Try another USB cable/port or SATA cable/port if it is a SATA drive.
