Hi guys, I have a new issue with an old computer.

I have a lady friend of mine that wants to get an old computer up and running
for her kids. It has an am37 motherboard and an amd 2200+ processor. on power up the monitor is not getting a signal from the computer. I have tried installing several different video cards but have not had any luck.

Motherboard has onboard video as well as PCI slots and an AGP slot. have tried all with no luck.

    does anyone have any ideas?

Are you sure that the monitor works?

Had to ask the obvious question :)

It looks to have a VIA chipset - I would try reloading the chipset drivers - from VIA.

Is the internal speaker connected (if so you should get at least one beep)?

edit: Actually after reading your initial post you mentioned it was an old computer, have you tried replacing the CMOS battery? end edit.

Failing any kind of diagnostic information my first step would be to remove all internal cards/drives and only use 1 stick of memory.

If still no luck try other memory or try that memory in another system if possible.

From there I'd be looking at m/board, processor or PSU.

Check that internal speaker first though, POST beeps may narrow things down.

Have already replaced the cmos battery and power supply. still no beeps at all. everything seems to come up fine, hd spins up, cd/dvd's start disc test, floppy tests, but no video display. my next step is to stick in another motherboard and see what happens from there.

Before trying a second m/board try the below again, also please verify the internal speaker is connected?

Use the onboard graphics and only connect Keyboard and Monitor.

    Ok Dragon,

I'm out of ideas but would appreciate your feedback if you ever resolve the problem.

ok. I'm going to hang it up for today anyway, I have to go to my wood shop and finish a couple of chairs I'm working on. Maybe the time away will refresh my thinking and I can come up with a new route to take. Ya'll have a great day and keep up the great work.

FIC manufactured OEM AM37 motherboards for Emachine, HP/Compaq and other OEM PCs. Many of these were powered by Bestec power supplies which were known to blow due to bad capacitors. A majority of the time when this occurred the motherboard was damaged. I would suspect, other than the motherboard, that the processor could be toast.

Possibly with luck the above did not occur and there is a setting in the Bios to disable the onboard graphics and enable the use of AGP or PCI graphics cards.
