I have DSL and also use AOL as a BYOA (bring your own access). I'm trying to wean myself off AOL but do happen to like one of their features where I can imbed a photo from a file directly into the email message (not as an attachment) and it will resize it automatically. How do I do the same thing in Outlook Express? When I added a photo it was huge!!!!!! Is there a way to automatically adjust the size of the photo in OE or do I have to go to one of my imaging programs? If I must do it with an imaging program, what size do I resize it to?

Assuming you have an e-mail service that will work with Outlook Express (I use Hotmail), all you have to do is to click on the body of the e-mail section and from the Toolbar > Insert > Picture > then browse your computer until you get the graphic attachment you want.

I think it may only work for jpg, gif, and bmp. If it does only work for those formats and you don't have the graphic in such, then you'll have to convert it. IRFANVIEW should work just fine if you need a converter.

Thanks for the reply but maybe I didn't express my question correctly--my problem is that when I click on "picture ", I then browse to find the picture I want in a file on my hard drive, click open and it is embedded in the email but it is so huge that only a portion of the picture is visible--you must scroll down and across to see the whole thing. What I am trying to achieve is to have the picture of such a size that it is viewable when the email is opened without it being poster size. Like I said, with AOL I always get a message asking if I want to resize a picture when embedding it and then I click "yes" and there it is--a nice sized picture. Will appreciate any further thoughts!

pkl--I think it started with IE6 that if you or the recipient scroll your mouse over the bottom right hand corner area of an image that opens in IE (like .bmp, .jpg and .gif), an orange button will appear, which, when clicked, will resize the image to fit the screen. You may also have to check the box "Enable automatic image sizing" under IE's Tools|Internet Options|Advanced tab in the Multimedia section.
Alternatively (and if you do not have IE6), you can use Irfanview or MSPaint (or most graphic editors) to resize the image. In MS Paint it is the Image|Stretch/Skew function. In Irfanview it is Image|Resize/Resample. Of course you will have to Save the new sized image as a separate file and use that for the insertion of the picture into your email.
