Can't connect to Web on desktop with Router

    Hope I'm in correct place. I can get on the web no problem with my Desktop PC with XP Pro. When my kids come home from school break with laptops I hookup my Linksys Wireless G router so they can get on line. Its always a nightmare for me though. Anyway I'm trying again. [I run cable from desktop tower to "Internet" connection on Router. Then run cable from Modem to 1-4 "Ports" on router.] I then unplug my Modem (Comcast Broadband) at Surge Protector. Disconect my power source to Router. Then I shut off PC. I wait 10 mins and first plug in Modem, then power-up router, then turn on PC in that order. No luck, can't get on line :confused: It usually gets around to working but not today. I then just disconected my Router and am directly using Modem and no problem getting on-line with desktop.

    Took my nephews Laptop home, (Vista-HP dv2000) and did a "System Recovery" No choice, went thru a nightmare for over a week to get on-line with his IE7 . I did EVERYTHING but nothing worked. Over 3 months he wasn't getting on-line but never told anyone. So I need to hookup Wireless Router to get his working again in my house. Now I have comcast broadband here but at his house he has DSL. Should I just wait till I bring his laptop back to his home to hookup thru their wireless hookups??? They have a desktop with XP and a Apple laptop on-line with no troubles but before this "System recovery" IE 7 would launch but not connect to web. I think it will now from scratch.

    What's the model number of the Linksys router? Why do you connect the modem to one of the ports 1-4 rather than the WAN port?

    Ran a Diagnostic check ???

    No matter whAT I do I can't get on-line with my router. I'm POSITIVE that my conections are correct. Everything is showing its working, LED lights are lit. I did a troubleshoot and "copied" this printout of Diagnostic. Will this tell you anything????

    Try:

    1. rt click Network Places > select Properties
    2. rt click LAN > select Properties
    3. select Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Properties button
    4. Advanced button > Wins tab
    5. radio button Enable netbios over tcp/ip

    6. power off comp
    7. unplug modem
    8. press reset button on router & hold in for 30 seconds
    9. unplug router
    10. plugin modem & let synch, then router & let synch, then start pc.

    And, the modem MUST MUST be connected to the router Internet/WAN port.
    Your problem is that the router is NOT communicating with the modem. This can be caused by:
    1. malfunctioning router > upgrade firmware or replace it.
    2. may need x-over cable between modem & router or cable is bad > replace it.
    3. modem stuck, is still using mac address of computer NIC > call isp and they can refresh the modem from their end or replace the modem.

    If router IS communicating w/ modem then you should be able to access the modem interface via a Web browser using the address: http://192.168.100.1/

    TonyT you have been great like everyone else on this site is always! Just for the heck of it I tried putting both cables, (from PC, from Modem) into the 1-4 ports and I was able to get on line. Strange and I know thats not correct way of doing this because its not the way I have always hooked up before. I always ran 1 of the cables from the Modem to the routers "Internet" plug in. I'll do what your instructions pointed out and will let you know whats up.

    It's also possible that the router WAN port is bad. If connect as I instructed via the WAN port, and then access the router via browser http://192.168.1.1 , go to the Status page and see if DNS servers are listed there. If not, you may have to manually enter your ISP's DNS server addresses in the router Setup page.
