    Hi,

I have been having a lot of trouble sharing files and this is my last hope.

I am trying to share files between my laptop and computer... simple... right?

My computer Is running Winodws Vista.

My laptop is very old and is running Windows Millennium.

I have shared my documents drive on my computer so that my laptop should be able to access it... but, i get an error Access Denied. If i look in the permissions i have enabled Read Write and Full Control permissions. Also in network connections it says password protected sharing: off.

The weird thing is that the computer in the other room works perfectly and i have set it up exactly the same. What is wrong, why cant i share files from this computer?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

You don't say if the other computer is running Win ME. It may depend on that Win ME does not use the NTFS file system.

Try putting some files into the Public folder and see if they can be accessed.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I have lots of different operating systems on this computer but the only one that will share with my laptop is Windows ME. So that would be Windows ME to Windows ME.

But of course this computer has lots of NTFS partitions that I want to share.

I have the same linux as the other computer and I still get an Access denied error when I try to access files from the ext2 drive.

It used to work, about a month ago, since then I have been messing about with it non-stop. I have even re-installed some operating systems.

"It used to work... ". The change may have come about through installing a Windows Update or going to SP1 and settings have reverted to default.

I can only suggest you work through the setup in that link. It is probably the most definitive on the internet, being MS.

Let me address this: the files system has NO effect when sharing files. When sharing files, a network driver is used to access files, so it will use the file system on the PC it is running on.

Access denied errors suggest permission problems, so I'd look into that. Make sure all your accounts are password protected.

My accounts are not password protected as I hate typing in passwords and only I use this computer, everyone elwse has theyre own. I dont want the files that I am sharing to be password protected either, I thought i turned it off...

While you should be able to share files without password protected accounts I frequently found it works better with passwords set.
