    I'm using version 5.4.2.0 of the program. The website says that 5.4.10.0 is the latest version. Is it absolutely necessary to download a new version of the program, or is it OK to keep my current version as long as I keep my virus sigs updated?

    Hi shadowhawk,

    My eTrust version is also 5.4.2.0 which I installed a few months ago when IPE ran out. I downloaded a later version, 5.4.10.1 last month which I never installed, that supposedly had only minor changes. Here is an excerpt from from a grc newsgroup post I saved at the time:
    By the way, to download the newer version, I used the link from my copy of eTrust's "welcome" e-mail, which said,
    "Your copy of eTrust EZ Antivirus can be downloaded at your convenience,
    using the following link: ftp://ftp.ca.com/pub/myeTrust/apps/EZAntivirus.exe

    =====================================
    Right now, the ETrust FTP site at ftp://ftp.ca.com/pub/myeTrust/apps/ shows
    EZAntivirus.exe 7757 KB 08/19/2002 8:26:00 AM so I guess a newer version is out. A week ago, I was checking the FTP site and it still showed EZAntivirus.exe 4349 KB 05/22/2002 12:13:00 PM (I happened to have that information in a sent e-mail)

    I don't know anything about this latest version but my current version seems fine to me so I guess I'll leave well enough alone. It's not necessary to have the latest program version as long as your virus signature files are up-to-date.

    Exactly. If/when the current version does get so obsolete that it can't be updated anymore, I'm sure they'll email us saying a new version's available, or perhaps the Autodownload will tell us so.

    I downloaded the new version of Etrust ezAntivirus 6 and so have 3 friends. It wrecked havoc with our computer. I'm using a HP and the others use Dells. Error messages everywhere and would shut the browser down. I went in and removed the new version and reloaded the older version and everythings fine now. I have all my downloads in a download folder that I created in my documents and thankfully the old version was still there or I'd be up a creek so to speak.

    I'm so sorry I didn't post a followup. The problems with eTrust's EZantivirus version 6.0 have been discussed on another forum and there are a number of threads about the poroblems on the news://news.grc.com/grc.security.software newsgroup.

    Being conservative about installing new software I didn't upgrade but instead looked at what was being said and was very disappointed in whatI was reading. Unfortunately, I've also read that signature updates for version 5 might be phased out. This was copied from another forum:
    I might be looking for another antivirus program with an "autoprotect" feature when my current subscription expires. I already use F-prot for Dos for "on demand" scanning.

    EZAntivirus UPDATE

    ftp://ftpez.ca.com/pub/myeTrust/apps/ has the latest 6.0.xxx versions of EZantivirus. I got version 6.0.125 yesterday:
    EZAntivirus.exe 7428 KB 10/21/2002 since it looks like there may not be any more signature updates for 5.xx
    The last one at ftp://ftp.ca.com/pub/myeTrust/sigs/ is dated 10-18 -02**

    I've been reading the news://news.grc.com/grc.security.software newsgroup where there are a number of eTrust posts and it looks like version 125 is good (it was the .123 version that was giving people grief) and that it's ok to install over the 5.4.x.x versions. I'm going to wait it out a bit longer though.

    **EDIT: there's a new signature update at ftp://ftp.ca.com/pub/myeTrust/sigs/

    File: aup_2303.exe 919 KB 10/24/2002 1:52:00 PM

    Well maybe I'll upgrade this weekend. I dunno right now. Should I upgrade over my existing one, or uninstall it first?

    I'm gong to stick with 5.4.2 for now but when the time comes to upgrade and if I decide to stick with eTrust, I'm leaning towards installing on top of 5.4.2 since that's how eTrust says to do it .

    I decided to install 6.0. So far no crashes (knocks on wood), but I noticed it created an AUTOEXEC.BAT file with the following lines in it:

    SET AVENGINE=C:\PROGRA~1\COMPUT~1\ETRUST~1\SCANEN~1
    PATH=C:\PROGRA~1\COMPUT~1\ETRUST~1\SCANEN~1;C:\PROGRA~1\COMPUT~1\ETRUST~1\ETRUST~1
    SET INOCULAN=C:\PROGRA~1\COMPUT~1\ETRUST~1\ETRUST~1

    Do I need this to run when my machine starts up, or is this just for DOS mode? Is it OK to get rid of this, as I haven't used AUTOEXEC.BAT for a while?

    I know nuttin for nohow about EZ Trust.

    But I can't help but wonder if part of that is not to check ( and protect ) the boot sector and check some of the Windows system files at boot up.

    NAV does this but it only has one line added.

    But I also do not see and actuall Command Line. All seems to be SET or PATH

    C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVDX.EXE /startup

    The above is the command line in my Autoexec. But I am using Win98SE. ME may ( would ) not allow it.

    As a suggestion. I would shut off the starting logo and allow the Autoexec process to be viewed. That may give you a clue also.

    And last but not least. Some programs that do add stuff to the Autoexec do not work properly with out it. I see several SET commands which help to keep things going in the right direction.

    What do you mean by periodic ?

    AV update checking should be a DAILY routine.

    Do you have AV software running FULL TIME and checking your e-mail as it is being d/led ?

    I know that there are some that do think checking e-mail as it is being downloaded is nonsense, but it is getting to the point that some Viruses DO NOT need to be Actually opened. They open themselves as soon as they hit the machine.

    I also suggest getting, installing and REGISTERING MailWasher. Use it to check E-mail on the server WITHOUT d/ling it. If it even suggests a Virus it can be DELETED OFF OF THE SERVER .

    Protecting ourselves is not fun & games. We can no longer cut corners. It is now a FULL TIME job and DAILY routine.

    At least that is my opinion.
