Many thanks to Christer, Steve and Pete for the very helpful guide in the stickies. I'm preparing to do this operation, and have a couple of tiny questions on detail which came up while I was doing a preparatory "dry run" before unplugging the phone and locking the door for an afternoon and doing the move:

    1. The guide refers to Office 2002. I am running Office 2003. Looking at the default location for Outlook files, I noticed that alongside outlook.pst in the same folder is another file which you didn't mention called extend.dat -- I assume that's a file that wasn't present in Office 2002, but was introduced in Office 2003. The obvious assumption is just to do the same with this file as with outlook.pst, i.e. move it, too, to the new folder, but I thought I'd better ask to be sure. Is it really that simple?

    2. I don't use Outlook Express (and am not even aware whether it's in my system somewhere), because Outlook covers email anyway and adds so many other options. Can I safely jump all that section of the guide, or are there any elements of Express which are "hidden" or shared bits of Outlook, and if I don't go through the motions with Outlook Express, Outlook won't work afterwards?

Grateful as ever for any guidance.

    Hello Geoffrey,
    thanks for the thanks and you're welcome ... :) ... !

    1) The file extend.dat is not new to version 2007. It was/is there in version XP (2002) as well and before that, I assume. I don't know what it actually does (and that goes for most *.dat files) but it is not necessary or even recommended to move it. My guess is that, if moved or deleted, it will get recreated in its original location.

    2) If you don't use Outlook Express, you don't need to move those files, including the address book. There's no link or connection to Outlook.

    Hi Christer.

Great! I now have no further excuse to put it off (only about 30% of C: left free) and shall take a deep breath and start. As soon as the family's all out of the house. Including the cat, who always tries to sit on the kbd.

TVM again, and a happy festive season, if we don't "speak" before. I think yours will be whiter than mine.

I live in the extreme south of Sweden. Maybe 5-10 days with snow but rarely longer without melting away. Right now, it's green (or grey) and 6 degrees above zero (centigrade).

    I hope all goes well!
