[Resolved] Need some help with an infected PC

I'm trying to help a lady I used to work with get her PC running better. She's let her grand kids have total run of it for a while and it shows. When I first sat down at it, it took several minutes to boot to the desktop. The boot time is less now, but still not that great. She is also having trouble receiving email, she can send but not receive. Not sure if the malware is causing that problem, figured I would get it clean then attack the email.

    I ran Spybot and Malwarebytes so far, and a Kaspersky online scan. Spybot found 368 items and fixed them, Malwarebytes found and fixed a bunch too. The Kaspersky scan only found one item. I'm attaching the Malwarebytes logs and the Kaspersky log and the following is the HJT log. I'm sure there is more to do here;

    Hi Bill,

We need a more comprehensive log than HJT these days. Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection
    • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
    • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
      1. DDS.txt
      2. Attach.txt
    • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please include the contents of both logs in your next reply.

System appears to be clean Bill. Recommend you uninstall the outdated versions of Java.

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

I would also recommend resetting Internet Explorer. Open Internet Options, select the Programs tab then click Reset Web Settings.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Check the boxes to the left of:

      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All Users Temp
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
      • Recycle bin

    • The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
    • Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK then exit.
    Reboot

Defrag the drive, reboot and defrag again. The second pass should complete rather quickly.

Now, let's rebuild the system prefetcher. Open C:\Windows\Prefetch and delete everything present, including the layout.ini file. Leave that window open and open a command window. Type or paste the following command then hit Enter.

    rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

The layout.ini file should reappear within 2 minutes, along with some other prefetch files. If it does not, repeat the command. I've seen it take 3 or more times for it to reappear, so repeat if necessary. Wait approximately 10 minutes after the layout.ini reappears, then reboot and logon ..... 3 times consectutively.

Let me know if things have improved, and if they are acceptable.

    Hi Dave,

Things have improved quite a bit, boot up time seems reasonable now, internet response is a lot better. I still cannot get email to work. She's using OE, and it continuously gets an authentication error. I'm using the same ISP and OE also and have compared all her settings to mine and everything looks ok. I've had her call the ISP and change her password and that didn't help either. Not sure what's going on with it, I'll probably have to call the ISP myself and see if they can help.

Glad to hear things have improved Bill. :)

As you suspect, authentication failure is generally due to password. I concur that you should probably contact the ISP, but do it while you're in front of the PC. ;)
