I'm trying to install XP PRO...currently using 98SE...and I want dual boot capabilities until I'm comfortable with XP. I've attempted the install several times with error messages when finally booting into XP. The problem appears to relate to my ATI video card (Radeon DDR 64MB VIVO). ATI says the SP1 contains a fix for the problem...so I think the slipstream option described on http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/winxp-sp1-bootcd.html may be a solution. BUT, I'm having trouble doing the slipstream using my 98SE. I've tried all the directions listed, but get "bad command or filename ". The instructions appear to be for XP or NT. Is there a way for me to do the Slipstream to make the bootable CD from my 98SE? Or do I need to do it on a machine running XP?

Thanks for that link, ningaming! I set it up exactly as instructed there, and when I execute from the RUN box, I get the following message:

    ***********************
    Error Starting Program

The XP-SP1.EXE file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:strstr.

    *****************************************
And another box with a red circle X that says:

    H:\XP\XP-SP1.exe [I'm using drive H:]

A device attached to the system is not functioning.

    ******************************************
That's the same error messages I got when trying to perform the same actions earlier from a DOS prompt. Any ideas as to what it's referring?

Never mind, ningaming...I found a link referring to that error message. It says I cannot do it from my machine...it must be done with a machine using 2000 or XP. Guess I'll have to use someone else's machine to get the job done. Again, thanks for that link...it was very helpful!

    Success!

Success!! Thanks again, ningaming, for that helpful link...that was a lifesaver! I used my boss's machine at work, XP PRO, and the slipstream went without a hitch. Then tonight I was able to do a successful install. I now have dual boot capabilities until I learn XP and find out if it will be compatible with my older applications.

It appears that the SP1 was what I needed to overcome the compatibility problem with the install. And the Slipstream was the only way to make it happen!

To those of you responsible for this site, I say GREAT JOB! I've learned mucho already from just browsing around!
