Maybe it's been discussed already, but are there any opinions/verdicts on plusses/minuses of installing/using the SP1 for IE6? (This is not SP1 for WinXP. It is offered on the Windows Update site as Arie has posted on Sept. 11.)
I am specially interested in its use with Win98.
    Thanks.

Nothing negative thus far (on a Win98 box)! List of fixes can be read here.

brett--Thanks for your experience!! And thanks for the MSKB article, but I tend to put MS pronouncements a bit lower on the credibility scale.
    Anyone else have comments/experience?

Jim I have it on XP and the only problem I had was that it changed one of my security settings. I suppose that's to be expected and it wasn't too hard to track down and reset it.

Actually the setting was in OE > TOOLS > OPTIONS > SECURITY TAB > and it tagged the box saying "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus." You can't hardy tolerate having that box checked.

    Regards.

Zephyr--Thanks for that helpful tip for the day I succumb to installing it!! I understand you have not seen any other changes to your Security/Privacy settings in IE or OE.

    ANY OTHER EXPERIENCES OUT THERE?

I run W2K & I just installed IE6 SP1 & have noticed a frequent freeze (20-30 seconds) when trying to reach a web site. It might be a coincidence BUT it wasn't there before. I tried to reach the same web sites with Mozilla & haven't encountered any problem. Please advise.

I use IE 6.0sp1 on Windows ME, and I have to say I think the program not only loads faster, but loads web pages faster, and when a new IE window pops up like when you click on a link, that window tends to load much quicker now than it used to. IE 5.5sp2 though, would open new windows and load the page much faster. But I like sp1 too. Hope that helps since Windows ME is like a third edition to Windows 9x.

IE is so embedded into the OS, I always wait a couple of months or longer before I'll upgrade. I like to let a few million other people be the beta testers...Still have put IE 6 on this home machine.

    update on IE & OE

    Zephyr:
Like you I'm running Windows XP, & had to change security settings re: opening attachments. But I am having another problem, which I am still trying to sort out. I am not able to get udates automatically from my Virus protection Programme, have contacted Trend PC-cillin & still no feed back???
I can do it manually, but when switching to auto, a window comes up saying "unable to find your update server. Please check your network settings" Have done all that, have gone through endless tries, but still no success. Hoping you can help me out with this one.
Sorry, if this was asked in another post, but I really would like to get this cleared up.
This particular thread came via my Newsletter.
    Thanks,
    Lucy

I use windows 98 SE. Downloaded and installed the service pack and have not noticed any changes to my operations.

IE is so embedded into the OS,

I had the same impression but, I am now wondering. Is it really and if so how deep ?

Last evening I put Win98 Upgrade ( SE ) ( brand new from Wall Mart ) on top of 98 FE with IE6 SP1

I was really looking to have to re-install IE6 but it seemed to have no effect on IE6 SP1 at all that I could see ( and still don't see any this AM. ) Nothing better. Nothing worse. And I did not run the IE Repair till just a few minutes ago.

Much to my great surprose it did not touch Media Play 7.01.

I did have to re-install NIC Drivers, Directx and my Intelipoint software and a couple of things from the Windows Update site. I thought I was going to have to re-install the printer but after the second restart that fixed itself.

Could it be because SE is really not too much more than 98 with the Cust Svc Pack included ? Maybe a few other updates that I don't see.

But overall, If I did not know for 100% fact that SE had been installed I would not know it.

I bit the bullet and installed IE6 SP1 over IE6.
A few minor changes (which I could revert), but the BIG one is that on the Windows Update page from which you download the individual updates the "Read this First" links do not work. (Clicking directly leads to nothing happening. Opening in New Window leads to "Page cannot be displayed ".) The Address (URL) for all the "Read This First" links is all javascript:void(0). I do not know if that URL is different than it was before SP1.
So far, I do not see problems connecting to active links on other pages or the other links on Windows Update.
I cannot see any changes to ActiveX, Java or Security settings.
I am almost sure I have seen reference to this somewhere else but cannot find. Any ideas?

BillyBob--A kind soul (Nancy) on another board gave me A solution.
It is to put your (Win98) Windows Update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
    into your Trusted Sites!!
I don't know if that is the only solution.
And I have to click directly on "Read this First ". Right click|Open in New Window won't work.
Maybe, of course, MS just fixed their Update site in between the time I first tried to open "Read this First" and the time I put the site into Trusted Sites. (The link still reads java script:void(0) )
You might try to access again and see what happens before you go the Trusted Sites route on your Win98 PC's.
I am not sure I want MS in myTrusted Sites, so would love another fix!
And the whole thing is so weird since I made and can see no changes in my IE settings as a result of installing SP1. Hard to understand why Trusted Sites make the difference.
