I get this message when I click to open programs and files. I have 98SE on my Optiplex desktop but I can't open My Computer, My Documents, IE, Office Suite, etc., because "Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module MSVCRT.DLL at 016f:78002fc5. I don't have the original CD's. Also, I can't open the control panel but Run... seems to be working Ok. How do I correct this problem(s).

Try doing a repair. Open the Control Panel and click Add/Remove Programs. Select Microsoft Internet Exploror and click the Add/Remove button. In the next window select the "Repair Internet Explorer" and OK.

    Happy Holidays

I was unable to find what I needed on Microsoft's support link "...kbid=192193" or "...kbid=190536" ---one click led to another click to another, etc.

I downloaded the Visual Basic Runtime Files but when I click on the file to execute it the file doesn't respond--nothing happens. Should I consider purchasing a DLL repair software? Any recommendations?

    McGillr01,

I know you said you don't have the original OS CD but it is possible you still have the necessary files...

Before you do anything else using run (either start->run) or win+r type

    Code:
    command

    hopefully you'll get a command/dos screen/window... if so type

    Code:
    cd \
    dir *.cab /s | more

It could take some time for this to finish, be patient. Finally with any luck you'll see a list of files (around 60-70) if so take note of the directory listed above the files e.g.

    Directory of C:\Windows\Cabs

Once you have the directory name you can press space at the -- More -- prompts then exit.

If you have those files post back the directory name and we'll take things from there.

No, these tools are likely to cause more damage.

The file you downloaded is a self-unzipping file. Try looking in your TEMP folder for the actual installer.

I was able to locate the file in the Temp folder but double-clicking it still doesn't launch the file.

    I was able to find

    Directory of C:\WINDOWS\Options\Cabs

Do you need the files posted in this directory?

    No, you do ;)

Can you copy them to a cd/pen drive or another HD?

    No problem,

You may not need them now but you will someday, it's always better backing up your OS setup files before messing around trying to resolve other problems.

Once you've backed them up we can look closer at your problem.

No success copying the files. My windows 98 computer isn't recognizing my newer formatted cd/pen drive. However, I am able to access the Add/Remove Programs via Disk Clean Up. Don't know if this is a good thing or not. Any way, I can see all of the files in Windows/Options/Cabs . . . just can't copy them.

Ok, you'll have to be careful following any advice then, if you make an error those are the files required to reinstall the OS. I certainly wouldn't be happy messing around the system without having those backed up along with a boot disk and your product key.

You're best bet would be to burn the files onto a CD if possible, a boot disk would recognise this media without additional drivers (as long as the CD drive was internal).
