I have returned to my computer in the morning on three occasions over the last couple of months to find that it has restarted by itself overnight. On each occasion I had noticed a yellow shield in the system tray during the previous day informing me that an updates were being automatically downloaded. I never saw a screen that informed me that I needed to restart the computer in order for the updates to take effect, and the yellow shield went away by itself before I had finished for the day. I checked the event log today and didn't find any "1075" events overnight (though perhaps there is something else I should have been looking for). What could be causing these automatic restarts? Are the auto updates triggering them?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS

It is possible that Automatic Updates are rebooting your computer in cases where the patches require a reboot. I cannot confirm this as I would never use Automatic Updates, but rather Notify - I want to see what is on offer first and maybe pause awhile to see if any of the patches cause problems. If they do there is certain to be a thread started here.

FYI the 'out of band' patch for IE this week required a restart and so did others on Patch Tuesday Dec 9.

One other possibility you should consider - if the computer suffers a system failure and the default setting to restart on system failure is enabled then it will restart. To eliminate this from your line of enquiry ....

    Thanks!

Thanks for the helpful reply. I hadn't realized that automatic updates would automatically restart the computer, but indeed that is what it says under "How does Automatic Updates work" in Control Panel > System > Automatic Updates. Pretty insidious setting, risking loss of unsaved data with an unanticipated restart! I don't think it's a good option for Microsoft to label "Recommended" . . . I've reset the option to allow me to choose when to install the downloaded updates. Thanks again.

Glad to be of help :)

I would recommend disabling the automatic restart on system failure too as this is helpful in trouble shooting and gives you notice that a system failure has occurred.
