When I open myWord 2003 program the following message pops up

"Compile error in hidden module: uifuntions"

To proceed I click on the OK button and word-for my purposes, seems to operate quite normal.

How do I address this problem.?

Do you have now, or have you had, any programs installed that might use Word as an editor (except outlook)?

I found a reference to uifuntions being a function in a Greeting Card App which may have used Word as an editor.

You might consider running HouseCall to see if you might have picked up a bug.

    Try running Word in SAFEMODE
    word.exe /s
    or
Press and hold CTRL when you open the Word shortcut.

Compile error on opening word 2003

Good suggestion but same error message appears while opening word in safe mode. Press and hold CTL does not help

Further running house call simply gets me a huge number of error items but If I want to clear I have to subscribe. I previous was a subscriber but now use "VIPRE: from Sunbelt Software. It is far superior to House Call and uses far less of the CPU. I have no discernable virus problem.

Has anyhting recently been added or changed?

    The Hallmark Card Program?
    Windows/Office Updates?

You could try to run a repair of Office from Office setup or Office Tools but compile errors do not come from Office Apps.

Or check for updates to the Hallmark program.
    Try uninstalling the Hallmark App?

hmmm, at that point, I'd be doing a clean boot to windows and see if it is still present.

If still there, remove office and reinstall.

Does the Hallmark program include any custom toolbars for Word (I've never used it)?

"ui" is frequently short for "User Interface ".

There may be a toolbar trying to load which is busted or incompatible.

Next time you get to word, maybe try to remove all of the exiting toolbars and close it (though if the failed toolbar is not loaded, you won't likely see it).

FIXED. I just opened word but just to make sure I pressed and held control as I did so. Got a different error message relating to an add in and advising how to remove same.. Followed the insstructions and the opened word again and there was no compile error message. Many thanks for your help

    Great, glad to hear it!

For future reference, what was the add-in?
