I know there was a large number of maxtor removable drives recalled last year (in the UK) due to failing power supplies, but I don't think this is your issue.

Can you tell me what the model number is and what OS are you using. When you purchased the drive would be helpful as well.

    Hello,

Yes i removed it from the External casing and installed in my PC on a IDE controller no luck
my first partiton on 9Gb is ok its my second partition that i "m having problems with I/O error and it ask me to Format I know that's its not a USB error cuz i have other drives that are USB and I took the MAXTOR HDD out and put in and 80GB WDC in the Maxtor
Casing runnignon thee Same USB connector.

This has happen in the past on a full partition so i figured that maybe i would split it into
2 partition.. I really did not trust this HDD Maxtor so i burnt on DVD my data and music

    It's a DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB ATA/133 HDD

P.S I did not know that SEAGATE bough out Maxtor

yes My HDD is our of warranty as of 2005 I just called them....

But what I will do is do a chkdsk maybe it will repair the bad clusters or marked it has bad were it won't to that clusters

    Thanks Dabonz

If it keeps "losing" the partition/s I suggest you use the Seagate utilities to "update the MBR ", no luck, "format the first 32 Sectors of the drive ", then remake and reformat the partitions.

Same reason I do not fix my leaky roof when its not raining.

You could try "testdisk" . Read the How to Use with special note on Recover Boot Sector.
