I purchased Brother MCF855Cw All in 1 and it would be connected to xp programmed computer.
The instructions are there, but Staples gave me an 11ft USB 2.0 gold plated cable. The instructions say that it can't be more than 6 ft. cable.
Strange that Staples didn't know this, but now I have a problem as Brother Support states that over 6ft the connection may not be error free sending of faxes and info back and forth to the computer.

I'm not familiar with wireless and the Brother All in 1 will be 7 ft. from the CPU.
There are routers and adapters, etc. of all sorts and I'm ignorant of what is required. (Not sure I trust Staples to help me,,,,grin_)
Could some kind person please advise best and cheapest way to connect computer to the new equipment.
(I need 11 ft to run from desk down to floor and up again to location of All in 1 and so 6 ft. wouldn't work.for USB cable)

    Thank you.

Can you verify the model number...

I can't find any information for a Brother MCF855Cw printer.

    I'm sorry.........MFC-885CW

I'm 20 miles from the store with the 11ft USB cable and so don't want to make several trips in 2 ft of snow in British Columbia........

    Thanks.

    Ok, quick question.

If your printer has both wired ethernet and wireless 802.11g wireless why are you concerned with USB?

It apparently will be too far away for a 6 ft. cable and so I have to rearrange the office completely to get it closer to cpu.
Wireless,,,,,,,, I'm not sure what I require Routers? or adapters? range in price from $39. to over $100. and it really is just a home office computer.......
I recall a year or so ago my daughter 'gave up' and moved her computer closer to her telephone connection. when someone told her an internal adapter was the way to go.......
    I'm confusing myself

Ok, I think I'm beginning to understand...

Normally when you buy a printer like this it's to serve the whole office and USB limitations don't apply because networking cables can stretch a couple of hundred meters and wireless could easily get 20 meteres ;)

If it's a non starter moving the printer within 6 foot of the PC then I'd advise buying another network adpater for your PC (wired or wireless) and using the Brother through that. Test the printer first though with a cable within Brothers specs that way if it's faulty you can say it's been tested if/when you complain.

To reiterate, you are saying I should try it with a 6ft USB even if I have to temporary place it close enough to the cpu for the connection. Then it it works with no problems, I should buy a network adapter for my wired cpu (not a laptop, just to clarify) and then install it and I can remove the 6 ft. USB and move the printer to where ever I want it freely.

    Sorry if I seem dense.

Yes more or less that's what I'm saying and no you don't seem dense ;)

But one point, the network adaptor doesn't have to be wired, even though your computer is not a laptop you can still buy a wireless network adaptor for it.

    Oh oh..........
Wireless network adaptor? So that means technically the computer cpu is at point A and a wireless adapter is at B and printer is at C and none of them are literally connected by any cables.
Do you think that I am capable of installing something like this.
I have installed programmes and printers, etc myself over the years. I just don't think that I would want to remove the cover from the cpu and start playing in there. I once in my other computer installed extra RAM, but that is the limit of work inside the tower.

No, Computer is at point A, wireless adapter is connected to computer and printer can be anywhere (within reason) in your soho.

A wireless adapter can be connected via USB on the outside of the system and even installing an internal one isn't that great a problem (about the same as adding that extra RAM).

Now the question is do you think you can do this ;) It's not that difficult and there are people here to help.

So the wireless adapter is installed into a slot on the cpu tower, installed via their instructions and then install the printer per their instructions and that would do it?

You see it threw me when it started talking about the lan settings. There appears to be several sets of instructions depending on whether it has Secure Easy SEtup or AOSS , etc.
I guess if you are willing to help me if required, I can do it. It is just a case of doing it step by step it seems.

What can go wrong? I mean it isn't going to blow my computer (is it? LOL)

I'll exchange the cable and get the network adapter with USB connection if possible. I'll get back to you a later.........have to shovel the car out....and then get to town.

    Thank you again.
