I've got IE6 with SP2, fully patched via WindowsUpdate. I've noticed more so lately than ever before that any website with heavy graphics take a long time to display on my screen. Occationally, the browser will go into "Not Responding" mode, then snap back to life & display the page.

A good way to replicate this, is to display and look at the weather maps on the Weather Channel site www.weather.com. When I switch between differenet maps, IE goes to 100% CPU for 3-4 seconds, then displays the graphic.

There was a hotfix I applied a while ago (since been overwritten), that dealt with changing how the browser dealt with compressed graphics; my browser would crash every now and then, and this fix helped stop. I don't have record of the KB article that told of the fix anymore.

Question: Is there a fix / patch / other change I can make that will stop my browser from taking up all CPU when trying to display certain graphics? I've got a 2.4G Pentium4 processor with 1GB RAM. These stats have remained the same for some time; the onset of this issue does not coincide with me adding more RAM 1.5 years ago.

CPU spikes like this are normal...(unused cpu cycles are wasted cpu cycles)

Just clicking on your link shot my cpu up to 85% on a Pent 2.53 with 1.5 gigs of ram.

Interesting. I didn't know CPU type/speed played that big a role in this day and age. I thought most CPUs can drive an OS / other tasks at a pretty good clip.

My work laptop has a core2 Duo 2.16, and it displays www.weather.com better than my Pentium4 2.6G at home. Good thing I'm treating myself to a new computer for my birthday in Feb. I'm going to take a stab at build-it-yourself.

Question: Is there a forum, or FAQ that promotes a specific tool for benchmarking? Is there an easy way for me to compare my CPU / graphics ability to others on WindwosBBS?

Getting a much faster processor will reduce how high the spikes go...

Generally speaking - you want the CPU to churm out data. There's no sense in having a cpu if you don't use it...

I clicked on the link and my Core 2 Duo shot up to 35% = Normal.

I've got a single core P4(2.6GHz) with 1GB RAM. Clicked on that link and usage went to 68%.

My CPU hovered at 80%, and bounced off of 100% twice. I've since started using the latest version of FireFox, and I don't notice those long delays with my CPU at 100% like I used to. It seems that the fix, is not to use IE.

I guess that guy at work was right. --the security guy who warns everyone that their fingers will dry up & fall off if they continue using IE.
