Here is a new one on me. I have not opened envelopes to print them for a while. Now when opened they show:
    Microsoft Works
    Out of memory
    OK
Other things like Word Processor and Spreadsheet are larger, and do not cause this.

Sometimes a simple reboot will cure this.

What Windows version are you using?

I'm thinking a resources problem (not memory), not applicable to XP or other NT based windows, but I'll take the plunge and guess you're using 98/98SE?

According to this page, this person had the same problem, and his solution was to use a different printer. Perhaps a reinstall of your printer if you have only the one printer.
Or try running Works in compatibility mode.
    1. Browse in Windows Explorer to the folder where Works is installed.
    2. Right-click Msworks.exe, and then click Properties.
    3. On the Compatibility tab, click to select the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" check box, point to the arrow, and then click "Windows 98/Windows Me ".
    4. Click OK.

Sometimes having a large number of files in TEMP folders can cause this error. Try running Disk Cleanup.

I have a .bat file which cleans out all temp files all over the computer each time at start or restart. Since I restart many times as I try to make this work, the chance of having a large amount of temp files is nil.

This article for Works 8.5 mentions
Works frequently queries the printer driver for information that Works needs when Works is formatting and printing a document. A damaged or outdated printer driver or an incorrect version of the driver for your hardware can cause an error to occur when you are working in a document, even if you are currently not printing the document.

I have the latest printer drivers installed. It uses the emulation printer driver. Other drivers and fake printers do not solve the problem. The fake printers allow opening an envelope but it will not print.

I reinstalled my old HPDeskjet 5700 printer and made it Default. I opened an envelope in MSWorks4. Clicked print and it printed as an envelope. I have no room for 2 printers. I have sold the 5700, and the new owner will be here Tuesday to get it. There is no doubt that the problem is caused by the C6380. I have yet to find a way to fix it.

I was sent to the Microsoft web site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933828/en-us by HP. I went down to Use a different printer driver, and from there to Windows XP. I use the USB001 Virtual printer driver printer port for USB. Now I will have to set the 550C printer to default for use with MSWorks4. I will set the C6380 printer to default for everything else. This will be no fun, but I guess I will have to live with it.

Food for thought - Works 4 is Five versions old. Might be time to upgrade or try the free Open Office.

I am old too and I can do what I have always done. I think that HP printers should do what they have always have done. I do not know why someone did not tell me before I bought the new printer. At least the only thing now with the problem is envelopes. All I have to do is change printers when printing and working on envelopes. I do like the job the new printer and scanner does on everything else.
