The machine lost connectivity last night for no reason. (Running XP MCE, SP 3, with 1.5 GB RAM). I found the Network Adapter disabled and so re-enabled it. Now I can get an IP address from the router but still no websites come up. I cannot even ping to the router!

I use Trend Micro PC-Cillin, so I tried turning off the firewall. No change. Help, please?

I rebooted the PC. I did not reboot the modem or router because the other computer is online just fine.

Just cause the other pc is online doesn't mean the router is sending into out on the port in question to the problem pc;)

Steve-- So the router could be at fault? Interesting. I just yesterday ordered a new router due to some other questionable behavior. I will take your advice and restart the old router and modem when I get home. We shall see.

Experience this "sudden for no reason" before.

Just get your router in somewhere else like your frn place to check wheter its faulty or not.

Mine is due to overheat cuz its on 24/7 since bought and unable to warranty cuz it happen after 1 month of my warranty period.

This router is a Linksys WRT54G, it has been in use about 4 or 5 years. Way out of warranty. Plus I don't like to deal with Linksys if I don't have to.

I often lose connectivity on ALL 3 computers and must restart the router to fix that. So, I think it's time for a new router. I should have the new one in a couple days.

Well I got the new router today (Linksys WRT-160N) and that did not solve the trouble. The offending PC is wired to the router, picks up a dynamic IP address, and that's as far as I get. Browsers get me nowhere. I cannot ping the router or the other PC. I can ping "localhost" OK. BTW, the other PC works fine for internet access on the same router. What do I do next? TIA!

As I said, I was ready for a new router anyway. Now that's taken care of.

I have SOLVED my problem: PC-Cillin pops up about once a day with a warning that a suspicious program has been stopped, and in the popup window is a button that says "Halt Internet Traffic." I have always been afraid to press this button, but I expect my wife might have pressed it. Now, I pressed it again and it says "YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION HAS BEEN RESTORED." And indeed it has.

Funny thing is, during the problem-solving, I had tried going into PC-Cillin manually and turning off its firewall, which made no difference. Some control in PC-Cillin only operates from that pop-up window. Let it rest in peace.
