If I export OE 6.0 address book from one identity to a folder as a .csv file and save it on my desktop, can I email that to another computer and import it to the same identity on that computer? I would like to do the same for 3 identities for both address books and all messages from a backup folder on my desktop.

You should be able to - save the attachment on the other computer to the hard drive and in OE go File > Import > Other Address Book

  3. to hide this advert.

Thanks for an incredibly fast response. You guys are amazing. I just emailed and received it with the attachment. So I can now just save the attachment to my desktop on the other computer and import from there? And do the same for all the OE exports?

Yes, although I would recommend saving to the hard drive direct - files on the Desktop can play funny at times IMO.

I just tried to import from the saved file I emailed. I get an error message, the shortcut is not available. The message seems to be looking for a disc in a drive. If this does not work I guess I can't use an email? Something else to try other than using a CD.

Peter I see our emails crossed at the same time as I found out you are correct. Is it best to make a new folder in my documents and use that?

Did you save the attached file to the hard drive before attempting to import.

Alternatively do you not have a USB stick?

I should have also asked if I should also not use the backup I have on the desktop and backup to a folder on the hard drive?

Make a temporary folder on your hard drive - My Docs is fine and save the attachment there directly from the email.

This old fart is having a problem with his slow mind. Sorry, but I reached a point where When doing the import I selected the back up folder on the hard drive and when got to open there was a file in the box with an extension of .lnk and then got an error message and never got to next-finish.

no, I think I should start over. I thought I could do it by using emails but that does not seem possible. So I'll try doing a bu to the hard drive and go from there. Or may use a pen drive as a last resort. Thnaks Pete.

It is - out of interest I exported my address book on my desktop to my laptop using email - I saved the attachment to the hard drive and it imported without issue.

Pete, I am trying again to backup and export messages in outlook express on another computer. For some reason I don't know why, the file I saved on the other computer appear as a shortcut when I try and restore, so the files are not there. any idea why?
Also, when I successfully restored another identity yesterday, there were duplicates of messages. How can I prevent duplicates from coming? thanks again.

You may find it helpful to read this MS KB .....

How to back up and to restore Outlook Express data

I have no idea why you are seeing duplicate messages - are they exact duplicates in every respect, including the headers? To see the header of an email message right click on it in the Inbox > Properties > Details.
