    Hi.

I could use help to determine if I should install these updates. They are on my taskbar waiting for me to download and install.

My computer runs XP Home Service Pack 2. My Windows Media Player is ver. 10. I do not know what Format Runtime version I have because I do not know what that is.

The MS Security Bulletin Summary for Dec states that KB954600 is for Media Player 6.4. and KB952069 is for Format Runtime 9.0, 9.5 and 11.

Any help will be appreciated. TIA!

    Ann,
I have read the corresponding Security Bulletin and done some googling.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-076 – Important states under Affected Software:

WinXP SP2 and SP3 with the vulnerability in the component Windows Media Format Runtime 9.0, 9.5 and 11. You have Windows Media Player 10 but there is no Windows Media Format Runtime 10. My guess, qualified or not, is that you have Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 and should install KB952069.

What about KB954600? I found an article on Windows Media Player in Wikipedia and I quote from "History ":

If we scroll down to "Release history" one can deduce that versions with higher numbers are all based on Windows Media Player 6.4 (Media Player 2) and that some file/files is/are still present in later versions and that's the reason for needing KB954600.

I installed both without issues (this far).

Many thanks, Christer for the explanations. Why does MS wrap up some of these updates in such a manner that you can't understand what they are for. I would never have figured that out for myself. I am grateful for boards like this one, where help is always available.

    Ann,
    you're welcome ... :) ... !

I just hope that my logical reasoning isn't too flawed. About Microsoft's reasoning I know nothing ... ... !

Hi Ann, I run XP HE SP3 and checked with Belarc Advisor and both KB952069 & KB954600 were installed automatically by MS Update on 9/12/08 and no problems. Neil.

KB954600 has stalled on download twice now on a 2000 machine I have, installed fine on an XP. Not sure where it's hanging up.
