In the Computerworld article (top of page 2), the security specialist for the company who tipped off Microsoft to the problem recommends disabling oledb32.dll as per the revised Microsoft advisory. Well, I tried that, but got the reply that the command cacls can only be used on NTFS, and I'm running FAT32. So I've had to settle for setting Internet zone security to high, which the expert says helps, but by itself isn't enough.

Meanwhile, am I protected by running both Windows Firewall on this XP SP3 machine and an external firewall on my Netgear router/modem, I wonder?

IE always has been as full of holes as Swiss cheese, so this is no surprise. What is surprising is why people are still using IE, with all the other, better, browsers out there.

Hi Silverojo - maybe this isn't the time or the place, but I'm getting pretty tired of the constant sniping at Microsoft users by fans of Linux, Open Office, Firefox and whatever else there is out there. OK, I'm not saying they're no good - I haven't had detailed experience of most of them (except Open Office, which I tried hard for a month and then disinstalled and went back to MS Office). Whatever his faults, Bill Gates has found the way to bring computing closer to ordinary guys like me who don't get kicks out of spending a couple of hours a day learning to use something exotic, but just want to sit down, switch on and work. Which may go some way to explaining what made him the world's richest man - he must have gotten something right.

I'm nearly 66, I've been working and playing with computers since 1960 (that's since before a lot of contributors to this site were born ;)), I've been a webmaster in a British government office for 15 years before retiring, and I've never found anything outside MS which lets me just boot up and get on with whatever I needed to do. Lots of gripes, of course, but I know (from reading blogs) that there are just as many gripes with other OSs, other browsers, other email clients, etc. It's a little like buying a car - doesn't matter what car you buy, there'll always be something you don't like, and there'll always be somebody who claims his/her car is far better, because.....

I'm not shooting at you personally, I'm just letting off steam. And probably going off topic, too. But let's just remember that (a) this site is for Windows users, and I perceive it a little bit like gatecrashing somebody's party to log onto a Windows users' site to say that a Windows product is no good, and (b) that I don't find it a constructive contribution to a thread, or in the spirit of helpful advice for which this site is justly appreciated, to simply comment that there's something better out there somewhere.

Sorry if this looks like a mild sort of flame - I just needed to get that off my chest. :D

theres also just the issue of personal preference, even if all of them are just as fast. some people like change, some people want to use what they know.

(which for me is IE7 settings through slimbrowser- which looks like tabbed IE6)

If other browsers were perfect, then silverojo's post would be slightly above meaningless;)

How difficult was it for you to switch to open office?

    Mr Watson,

As you have used computers for nearly half a decade, did you struggle switching from card readers/teletypers to VDU/Keyboard? Was it a problem adapting from a command line to a GUI?

Yes other OS's, Browsers etc have their problems, but to say you've "never found anything outside MS" that let's you "just boot up and get on" suggests to me that although you may have had spent many years with computers you severly lack experience.

MS has it's place in the IT world but they are not the be all and end all. The sole reason MS are so big is because you/me and others have to bend over backwards to buy a system without MS software installed.

This board is well moderated, I'm sure if the staff have issues with "gatecrashing" they will respond appropriately.

Why not? If there is something better out there then it should be pointed out in my opinion, but I do agree silverojo could have given more information ;)

    As did I, peace :)

If I switch to another browser do I need to delete IE? Is that even possible? If so, how?

you can remove access to it from add remove windows components, but you CANNOT delete it. It is impossible without ------- up the operating system.

MS is issuing an emergency patch to fix the problem. I just opened a new thread that contains details about the news release.

Oh heck, I really did get pompous, didn't I? Apologies to all (especially to silverojo), and many thanks to wildfire (and mel) for your elegant and patient fire blanket - there's a lot of good sense in what you say. I just thought, here we go, MS-bashing again, and started punching the keys. Of course, my own argument applies against me, too: if there are so many people MS-bashing out there, maybe that means they have a point...

As for switching from card readers/teletypers to VDU/Keyboard (and - -MICE), no, no struggle, just enthusiasm at new opportunities. But you just brought back a vivid, goose-bump memory of that inimitable smell of warm oil when you finally got some machine time at 11 pm on one of those huge old IBM punch-card sorters - thanks for that :)

PS: nearly half a century, BTW, not half a decade...

Promise not to go so hastily off-topic again. Now back to the problem at hand and BOBBO's link.
