I just recently purchased a new HP dv5-1160us. The laptop works great, but I have one small issue that is a real annoyance. This computer comes with a touch sensitive volume control above the keyboard, and it has recently started going crazy. It makes an annoying clicking sound and constantly adjusts the volume and it will not stop. Restarting the computer alleviates the problem temporarily, but it is obviously a bit time-consuming. The area is not overheating, and I keep the laptop clean. I am guessing it is a software issue or a problem with the driver. Has anyone experienced this problem before or can someone guide me through how to fix the problem?

    Thanks

Look up your model at the HP website. Get any drivers and specifically software, that may relate audio or the input devices (keypad, touchpad, etc).

If you look through the settings, see if you can disable that controller.

I have never had your exact problem, but my wifes laptop had a mouse control problem that after rebooting would go away. Then later in the day she would be complaining again the mouse was erratic. It turned out that when her laptop when into sleep and back out the mouse driver did not work well. So I told the laptop to shutdown instead in the power management. Now everything is OK, but does take her a few seconds more to get up and running. But sure beats having to reboot during an e-mail etc.

I would definitely try all the latest drivers, BIOS first. The if all else fails try my idea.
