    Hello.

For some reason my computer is running slower than normal.

Is there a program or free scan I can run to help determine what the problem is?

Or would it be better to do a system restore from a previous date?

    Thanks.

Have you recently install any new programs that could be running in the background and using resources? Check Task Manager to see what processes are running.

    Hi.
No I haven't recently installed any new programs.
In fact I uninstalled both Zonealarm and AVG to see if that would help but all it did was free up memory.
The computer is still running slower and I don't think it's anything in the task manager, but maybe some other registry or system setting.

When you say its running slower, what exactly do you mean ? Is it slower while running programs, slower internet access ?

hello sempron, Here's a few things to try, Run your anti-virus ans spyware programs to see if the find anything. Spybot search and destroy is free,
Next do a 'disk clean up' for your C: drive. Go into my computer, right click on C: select properties, in the general tab, select 'disk clean up', after a short while you will see a list of files; you can delete or compress old files. this will free up space on your pc. Now go into the C: tools tab, select 'defragment now', highlight the C: and click on defragment, allow this program to run. (A heavily fragmented drive runs slower).
After trying all this if it's still running slow; install 'Hijackthis'.
    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
Run the program and upload the log into this topic.
P.S Uniblue power suite is a good program for cleaning, and optimizing your system but it's not free.
P.P.S it's always good to let us know what your system specs are and what operating system you have.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll answer the questions :

    >>>When you say its running slower, what exactly do you mean ? Is it slower while running programs, slower internet access ?

    Internet access is fine.
It's slower to load programs and for e.g when I move the mouse cursor it often `jerks' instead of a smooth motion. But the main concern is it's taking much longer to load programs and when I have a few running the computer is definately slower than normal.
(I have 488mb of physical ram, and some virtual ram after that.)

I've checked every process via an online process directory and all running processes appear legit.

I'll run a defrag and hopefully that will speed things up.

Over the past few weeks I ran a bunch of various anti-virus and anti-trojan, and anti-malware programs. I did have some malware/spyware but removed it. (In fact one of the mods from an anti-malware forum suggested I post here with regards to possible Windows errors).

I have Windows XP with I believe up to service pack 2 installed.

I'll post a HJT log with my next reply.

PS : I downloaded a program called Uniblue registry booster. I've read that registry `cleaners' often can be more of a hindrance than good, what do you think?

I personally stay away from any so-called registry cleaners. Seen too many cases where they did more harm than help.
