I'm running a small LAN using a LinkSys router to access the internet and the router is acting as a DHCP server with an IP address of 192.168.1.1 and serving up IP's to my computer in the range 192.168.1.100 to 110.

Most of the LAN pc's are running Windows 2000 Prof. and the network is configured to "obtain an IP address automatically" and DHCP is enabled in the TCP/IP properties.

Upon first boot of the system (windows 2000 Prof) the following error shows up in the system log:

"The IP address lease 192.168.1.100 for the Network Card with network address 0050040F72B9 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.1.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message). "

Each windows 2000 system will have the same error relating to it's NIC address and respective IP address the router is serving up.

Doesn't seem to effect the system as far as I can tell. It's just one of those annoying things I can't find an answer to.

    Any suggestions out there?

    2 things.

First - is DHCP service set to autostart on the client PCs (at least the NT4/5 ones)?

Next - if you open the event and click on the button below the up & down arrows, it sends a text-only copy of the error to the clipboard. It has additional information that would help in tracking things down. You can just open a reply box here and paste the contents in.

Yes DHCP is set to start automatically and is thus started.

The error is what I've basically put in my original post but here's the whole thing:

has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.1.1

Just a thouhgt maybe but I am thinking Router. I also have a Linksys.

In the Router Setup under the DHCP tab there is a setting for the numbers of users.

I had this set to 2 and got errors when trying to get the the third one on.

But I have no idea now what the error said. I just left the default setting of 50 the next time I had to reset the Router.

Speaking of resetting. Have you tired resetting the Router ?

I usually have had to do that after we lost AC power.

A couple of times I have also had to completely power down the Router and then reset it.

A couple of time ( with no idea why ) I have had release all and let them renew as each machine was restarted.

Yes I've reset the router as well as releasing all the IP's but still get the error upon first boot of a system.

Also played with the number of IP's the router serves up with no change in results.
