Every conceivable way of starting windows XP leads to a black screen with a large white curser. I can then proceed no further. Consequently I am a in the dark as to the computer spec. All roads have led nowhere. please help.
    Thank You. Boyacka

Your conceivable ways may not compare with others on this forum ;)

I'll assume you've tried the obvious safe mode option but that would have given you some feedback before the black screen and white cursor.

    Have you tried VGA only?

Actually it may be easier if you could tell us what conceivable ways you have tried and the results?

    Black screen, large white curser.

1> monitor message. Power saver mode.
2> Normal start> Black screen, Large white curser.
3> Last Known Good Configuration. As above.
    4> Safe Mode> As above.
5> Safe Mode with Comd Prompt. As above
6> Safe Mode with networking. As above
    Will that do for starters?

Ok, with safe mode before the black screen with large white cursor did you see anything scrolling up the screen eg loading drivers etc?

For clarification, is this "large white cursor" a mouse pointer or an actual command line cursor?

Drivers loading in safe mode> Yes
Large white curser is a mouse curser and it moves.

And 5) (Command prompt) doesn't give you a screen where you can enter commands?

    If you can try

    Code:
    sfc /scannow

If it's not an option then a repair install may be required but as pointed out in a previous thread you may wish to consider backing up your data, given your limited options you may have to look at BartPE or a Live linux distro to do this. Post back if you need pointers.

    Hi, back again.
Investigated BartPE & UBCD4 & produced 2 CD's. they produce menus if I load to my own computer. Am now out of my depth.
A bit more background:- when I received my friends computer it had 2 graphics cards neither of which provided an input to the monitor. After removing the expansion card the integrated card provided an input albeit "faulty" ie Black screen white mouse curser.

Could be a graphics driver issue. Do you know the model number of the motherboard?

Look between the PCI slots, the m/board model is commonly printed there.

Ok, assuming the system you're using now has a CD/DVD writer...

Download everything on this page (obviously select XP as the OS). Once you've done this get back to me and we'll take it from there.

Copy them onto a CD including the manual which is named e1766_a7s8x-mx.pdf. We'll need them later.

Do you have an XP install CD available?

You mentioned it was a friends system, is the data on the drive important or does he/she have backups? (No we're not wiping it but better to backup first than wait until it's too late ;)).

e1766_aa7ss888x-mx.pdf. (quickstart) is not in English but there is a 60 page English manual.

Yes I have a XP CD available.

    Backup sounds good.

    Hope I have everything required.

I think we're ready to go, try booting from the Ultimate Boot Cd you've created... This will allow you to make backups and hopefully recover the system.

I'll be online for a few hours yet but if you prefer more instant comms look at my profile for MSN... I will suggest though for the benefit of others we post resolutions back on this board.

Ok, restart the problem system then during startup press and hold the DEL key...

    You should enter BIOS setup...

Use the right arrow key until you have the boot menu (look at the menu bar across the top of the screen).

Select "Boot Device Priority" and make sure the DVD/CD drive is the boot device... Then restart.

Let me know how you get on.

    Not having much luck.
If I make the CD drive the first one I get the black screen/curser, and it tries to boot. (Little CD icon on mouse pointer.)
If I make it tthe only boot device I get a black screen with a flashing curser (not a mouse pointer) which does nothing.
Bring on the magic hammer. Boyacka
p.s. I never go all in with pocket aces. Right/Wrong?

Do you have a floppy drive in the system? If so download a set of Xp install disks from here

We may have to try a repair install without a backup, there is a risk but if done correctly you shouldn't lose anything.

    Right ;)

one more idea.... does the CTRL + ALT + DEL works? if so go to File : New Task and write "explorer.exe" and hit OK

as far as i know if you see something on the screen there is no problem with the drivers ...most of the time if there is a problem with them you don`t see anything :)
