My avir4a antivir free has suddenly started hanging after about 99.3 % of its scan it seems to hang on a 5052da.msp file I have run it several times. I am running xp and recommendations. The system does not lock it keeps counting time but goes no further.
    Thanks

    Hi Robert,

If it were me, I'd see if I can do an on demand scan on the single file, in this case, "5052da.msp ". After verifying that the file is virus free, I''d then add it to Avira's "exception" list, which would exclude, skip, this file from all future scans.

If you need additional help on how to do this, just ask.

If avira still has a problem scanning this as an "on demand file scan ", I'd look further into why this happens. Things to consider: Perhaps the file is corrupt, what is it, is it needed...etc.

    Working the problem

I was unable to find out how to do a single file so am running a scan on only .msp files. I had to confess such ignorance but am more familiar with AVG which seems simpler to use in the manual mode. at any rate I am now up to the file in question. I have been scanning for 1:47:02 and have done 175 files. The file in question is 466 meg so it may take a while I will let you know later tonight. I have run AVG scanns on the same system and it seems all right . The file is in a protected system files hidden directory and it is also protected and a microsoft installation file that the net says are patches etc used for updates. Anyway that is all I know at this point.

Continuing the time on the counter is now 3:48.45 files scanned and all other information is unchanged I am not sure how long it should take to check a filer of almost 500 megs. But will let it continue to run all night.

    Hi Robert,

    Do you know what directory?

Where did you see this on the NET, and what OS are you using?

    Hi Robert,

    As luck would have it....

Did you see today's thread added to the Avira forum post on this issue? It advises to update Avira (if it hasn't automatically updated already). Apparently the new update includes the fix for msps. Please do so (update) and let me know if issue is fixed. As an Avira user myself, I'm extremely curious if the update solves the issue.

Note* Remember, you'd have to also remove the exclusion from Avira configuration.

    Now it is xpmsgr.chm

Well it went to 99.8 % finished and had been on the above file for over 3 hours. I killed it after about 12 hours. Hopefully they will fix the .chm files now they are doing the same as the .MSP files. Any other info you have?
