I am logged onto my XP computer at home, and I left it running. It went to a screen saver and now requires me to enter a password to get back in. I no longer remember my password.

I'm the sole user of the machine, so if I reboot, it will log me right into my desktop. I suppose that's fine - lost data will be the cost of forgetting.

But how do I reset my user password, when I can't remember the old one?

    If logged on as admin.
Start - run - (type in) control userpasswords2

Thanks! Now to hope I didn't set an admin password, too. If I did... Then I'm pretty much a lost cause?

Or can I fix the admin password (since I'm the owner and sole account) when it boots into my user account at restart?

Be sure and go into the screen saver area and tell it to NOT ask for a password;)

Good news! I was able to (re)set my user password inside my user control panel. And I won't forget it this time.

Inside the control panel, I had the option to create a new password, and was not prompted for my old one. Does that imply glitch? The setting wanted a password to come off of screen saver, and the account had no password, therefore any attempt would have been invalid? Something tells me it's not that convoluted, though...

However, I'm coming up blank on the password for the administrator account. What can I do to recover or change that?

If it's XP Home edition the default admin password is blank, there is none. If your account is an admin account, i.e. part of the admin group, then you can change the admin account password. If using XP Pro edition then change the admin password via Computer Management, not Control Panel (rt click My Comp icon > select Manage).
