I have Windows XP Home, and recently IE6 has
been giving me a "Page not Found" error after surfing for an estimated
period of 5 minutes. I can shutdown my computer, unplug the broadband modem,
plug the modem back in and boot up my computer, and the browser will work
for another five minutes before giving me a "Page Not Found" error.

This is a repetitive problem......boot...use IE6 for 5 minutes OK..then..page not found then boot again and repeat the process.....over n over nove n over again.

In the meantime OE6 is functioning OK and can even link to IE whilst IE is operative.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the Windows add/remove programs I have removed IE.
I have replaced IE with Mozilla Firefox then rebooted.
Opened Firefox and searched the net.
    Timed out probably after 7-8minutes
So the problem does not appear to be with IE or Firefox but somewhere else in the systems connection structure, bearing in mind that I do have a constant internet connection in that OE is always functional.
Just thought I add this bit of info to give a clearer picture.

Is it only IE that shows this behaviour? Hopefully you'll use a seperate email client (ie not webmail) such as Outlook or Outlook Express. The next time IE give a page not found error check your email. If that also reports errors then whilst still not working drop to a command prompt and return the results of

    Code:
    ping 127.0.0.1

    ping 74.125.45.100

    tracert google.com

    ping google.com

    Hi there Wildfire,
Seems you may have not read my post correctly...OE working OK have since installed Firefox and it still malfunctions the same way...In fact I have discovered that upon reboot access to the Internet is only available for 5-8minutes.
Soooooooo if I reboot and just let the PC sit for say 10minutes and then attempt the Internet it will not connect. Likewise up reboot and use other functions of the computer but not Internet then try Internet after about 10minutes it will not connect...all the while my email system OE is working OK.

Hi Roy66. Try updating to Internet Explorer 7 and see if that resolves your problem. I haven't used IE6 in a long time so maybe updating to IE7 will fix your issue. Also if you don't want to do that then download and run WinSock Fix and see if that resolves your problem, http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html. :)

    Evan OMO,

I tried IE7 and it was nothing but a pain so I got out of that one quickly.
I have tried to run WinsockxpFix but I get a "not a valid Win32 application.

Ok from your above post it looks like it could be your internet connection. I assume you have a wired internet connection. Maybe you could try getting a new modem and see if that resolves your problem.

Appreciate your help but I figure this one is way out..as I do have internet "wireless" connection and can email no problem as well as run my laptop off the same wireless modem.

    Corrupted registry I'd reckon.
I have Googled and brought up heaps of hopeful solutions to this problem but neither I nor anyone else I Googled has found the solution.

This POST can be considered CLOSED as I have re-formatted my drive and reinstallled XP.

Thanks to everybody for their time and input.

    Have a Great Christmas

    Hi Tyler,

Because you haven't indicated what programs you are using, how your system is set up it might be best if you do a "google" search" on "Page cannot be displayed" then "Page not found"

You will find a whole heap of information there and if you find the solution from that search it be be great if you came back and posted your solution thereby helping others.

What version of media player are you trying to download and please post the link you are using..quite often you get this response from a weak or broken link.

Try googling media player and you will come up with a number of different links to different sites to download the same software you are wanting to download.

    thanks so much roy66.

    it worked just fine now.
mind if you tell me what caused the problem?
it gave me the options to run-save-cancel.
so i saved it for the better.

Did clicking on that link I gave you work.

If so I would say that you just got a bad link connection..happens at times so you have to search for another way in.

I'm no expert either I'm a 72 year old working by trial and error these things are programmed for scientists and mathematicians but practice produces results at times and when it gets too hard just sing out HELP...thank GOD for all these wonderful folk all across the world who are so willing to help as they understand the problems and frustrations of things going wrong.
A MASSIVE big THANKS also to the folk who run these forums they are so kind and bighearted to make these facilities available.

Did clicking on that link I gave you work.
