Recently installed an OEM copy of SP2 onto my computer. Just yesterday, I got the notice that there were upgrades available for my computer. Clicking the shield reveals that it's SP3 that wants to install itself.

I have heard whispers of bad things about SP3. Is there something I need to prep my system with before I install it? Should I install it at all?

SP3 has caused a few problems on a few computers, but the vast majority of users have had no issues. I, for one, ran all the beta's up to RTM without issue and run SP3 on my desktop & laptop.

Is it absolutely necessary? No providing that you keep SP2 fully patched. SP3 is primarily a rollup of all the patches since SP2 - there are a few minor changes, but they are buried that deep that the 'normal' user would not be aware of them.

If you decide to load I recommend downloading the full pack rather than using Windows Update......

My general recommendation prior to installing anything is to do a cleanup. Delete all temp files, temporary internet files, cookies and history. After that, a defragmentation. A little work but I have a feeling that it reduces the risks.

Hi, I just updated from an OEM version of XP Pro SP 2 to SP 3 following Christer's advice and suggestions, see this thread

I had no problems what so ever and computer is running just fine.

PS (Christer) the fishing trip was a bust, no fish, but lots of good poker and stories.

    John,

I'm a glider pilot and that sport is weather dependent, to say the least. I've been sitting on airfields in bad weather for over thirty years, lying (telling stories), loosing money (on poker) waiting for an improvement. Hey, on rare occasions we even went fishing ... ... !
