agp440.sys Pc rebooting. Bios problem?

Hi

My motherboard works fine without pluging in a Geforce FX5500 AGP 256 Mb otherwise if I pluged it in it keeps rebooting few times and hangs loading in safe mode at AGP440.sys.
I tried few things without success :
1- I updated my Geforce driver to the latest one and I am using for my motherboard Asrock P4i65G Bios P.140
2- I used another agp radeon card same problem just for testing.
3- I reloaded my XP drivers I using Restore XP CD
4- I checked microsoft support site for similar problem and found a that I have to disable agp440.sys using XP cd Restore which I did and the problem is fixed for short time with no rebooting but I can't see my geforce running or displayed it was only running on my motherboard memory but not the Geforce.
Right now I am using the onboard video of my motherbord Asrock P4i65G . I am wondering if it is a bios issue or a hardware compatibility between a Geforce AGP and Asrock P4i65G motherboard

I might be able to give you some guidelines, but not a set of instructions because I don't know your exact system.

I had almost exactly the same problem when I was a beginner , just steel yourself to start uninstalling drivers (and their associated software). [Pete, dima said the latest Geforce drivers are already installed, it may be other drivers that need updating.]

Your on-board graphics are "Integrated Intel® Extreme Graphics 2 ", this is your motherboard's specs page:

Take out the nVidia (Geforce) card if it is installed.

Boot into Safe Mode (using the onboard [Intel] graphics). Go to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and find the nVidia (Geforce graphics) drivers and choose to uninstall them. Boot into normal mode, if you have any problems, reboot back to F8 (Startup Options) and select VGA Mode.

NOW, when you get to normal or VGA mode, install the INF driver ver:5.0.2.1003 from Asrock:

Tell us how that goes and then we can then try to install specific drivers for your new graphics card.

Edit: In (Safe Mode ->) Add or Remove Programs, look for any ATI "drivers" that you may have installed and uninstall those as well.

So far so good.
I followed exactly the steps you instructed me to do. I am running now on the onboard video with the new installed IFN driver Ver: 5.0.2.1003 and I uninstalled earlier as you told me any NVIDIA or ATI files from Add/Remove control Panel using safe mode and rebooting in Normal
I am right now about to install the video card Geforce FX 5500 AGP 256 Mb and I need a compatible nvidia matching Driver for installation . I have one Driver but I am not sure if it is the right one as I had many problems with it earlier. I also found one updated one through Nvidia site but I am not sure about it..! I prefer to wait till you advice me which one is suitable for my system and the next steps to be taken.
I also set back to Enable AGP440.sys through XP CD restore as I disabled earlier but it didn't make any for difference to my problem.

The drivers I would use, or try first, would be the original ones on the CD that came with the graphics card. You can try later versions if you have have any further problems, but the original drivers should work without problems. The other source I use is the manufacturer of the graphics card, nVidia only manufacturer the chipset of the graphics. So...I try the "oldest" first, the card manufacturer might have an updated set that they recommend, then nVidia will have the "most recent ".

What will be most important is that before you shut down to put the card in, go into Safe Mode again and the same way you uninstalled the other drivers/software, find the uninstaller for the Intel graphics and run that.

If you boot into normal mode using the new card, the Add New Hardware wizard will run. It might best to boot into VGA mode and run the nVidia installer there. Don't let the wizard install the wrong set (like finding them on the internet), either direct it to the drivers CD or click Cancel in the wizard.

Sorry I couldn't get back to you on time I was trying few things without success. It got me frustrated . I tried the INF driver you suggested to me Ver: 5.0.2.1003 making sure the old ones are first fully uninstalled using Add/Remove in safe mode and rebooting normal and start each time to install the one suggested to me from Asrock site and each time It fails I tried other drivers as well from the oldest to the latest that I downloaded but no result:

INF ver: 7.0.01025 (my old graphic card CD)
Ver: 5.0.2.1003 ( suggested to me from Asrock site)
INF_XP_2K_ME_98(5.0.2.1003)
win2k_xp1416
INF_allOS_9.1.0.1007_PV

I also tried the video driver both old and new ones of my graphic card NVIDIA AGP FX5500 256 Mb:

version 71.90 (old one that comes with cd)
Ver 4.0.100.1190 (new updated one)

Right now I am back to square one and I pulled out the Headache nvidia agp graphic card and I am happy using my onboard 96 Mb memory ( Intel Extreme Graphic) for at least the time being till I buy a more performing and reliable motherboard that can match a descent graphic card
It seems like a problem of compability and communication between the Intel Chipset 486 G and the AGP graphic card..may be a design problem of an old technology no longer in use.??
It was a Great challenge for me with the Help of you guys (Mat+Pete) to try to solve this problem and at leat to make understand where the problem comes from.
It is a learning experience.

Just in case you didn't know, if you change the motherboard and switch the CPU to the new one, you will need to replace the thermal compound between the CPU and the heatsink.

Those INF drivers are not for the graphics, they are the drivers for the chipset on the motherboard.
