Just a suggestion, but first try turning off some of those toolbars and add on programs and see if it speeds up. Tool bars can be turned off by clicking "View ", "Toolbars" and unchecking them. you and always go back later and re check them when you know which ones you want to keep. Once you decide, delete the rest.
You can do the same with the add-ons by clicking "Tools ", "Add-ons" and disabling them.

I agree with redkcir, though I might take another approach. Open Add and Remove programs in the Control Panel and uninstall all toolbars that you do not want, need, use, etc. Once done, restart the computer.

Next, please download DDS and save it to your desktop.

• Disable any script blocking protection
• Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
• When done, DDS.txt will open.
• Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
• Save both reports to your desktop.

I though of that (deleting and rebooting), but it didn't address if some of the bars and add-ons were wanted. But after reading your replay, I have to agree. The ones that are wanted can be reloaded.
One more suggestion, you might also want to run "Winsock XP Repair" if that doesn't help enough. Sometimes deleting toolbars and helper programs mess up the win-sock settings. I had that happen when I removed a toolbar and my Google page started messing up (only in explorer, Firefox continued to work fine). Running the repair program fixed it. I found it on "Snapfiles.com "

 

Thanks for your input redkcir. I don't expect any problems to arise from removing the toolbar(s), though having options is always good. For reference, below is the best WinsockFix I've found, instructions for use included.


Download WinsockFixWinAll from Digital Minds International. Scroll down to Utilities where you will find;

Double click WinsockFixWinALL.exe to run it, then click Repair Winsock.
When finished it will open a log after you've clicked OK to the reboot reminder prompt.
Close the log, exit the utility then reboot.

 

The problem is (its my sister's machine) and she is adamant about not losing the games she paid for and the sites she used to get them. It is a challenge because she lives in another state and is computer illiterate. To tell her what to do is like beating your head against the wall

 

The toolbars and Browser Helper Objects (BHO) are not required for the games. They are crapware that came bundled with the games and other apps that would not even be there if the installer had given the option for a custom installation and she chose not to install the add-ons. If she wants the computer performance to come back into a normal range, she's going to have to accept she might forfeit something to get there.

 

I agree 100% but getting her to understand that is going to be the challenge.
