When I click on a link to open a page I also get a blank page open as well as the page I wanted open.

Bit of a nuisance and of course not normal, can anyone plese advise how to normalise......this issue...not me.
    Thanks

I'm stretching a long way back to IE6 - now using IE8 and don't have access to a running copy of IE6 anymore, so my suggestions may not be valid for 6......

    Tools > Internet Options > Manage Add-ons

Disable all add-ons and see if the problem is resolved. If it is re-enable one by one until the culprit is found.

If no joy try running IEFix

Try a reset of IE 6 - IE 7 has a reset button, IE 6 does not - the procedure is as follows (from here) ....

    Familar

I know for IE7, it is possible for 2 tabs to open when you want to go to 1 site.

For ie 6, I use toolbars. Try Windows Live Toolbar or Yahoo Toolbar for the tabbed browsing. This might give you the option to make tabs appear instead of windows.

This is if you want to go that root.

Thanks ever so much for your invaluable support.
As things weren't working out I decided to go for IE7 but found myself with a lot worse problems connecting and such so uninstalled and have gone back to my 2page opener IE6 which I will continue with the help of others to get functioning correctly.

With IE7 I made a few attempts to respond to your help notifications I even got as far as typing the reply but it wouldn't fix it in.

IE is just acting a bit ornery on my desktop..thankfully I have a laptop as well which I have been able to use when needed.

I'll kep checking in and keeping you abreast of what's happening.

    Thanks again

    Pete,
I followed your instructions in your last post.with the exception of.....The default TIF folder is located in "System root\Documents and Settings\user profile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files" and the default Amount of disk space to use is 10% of your hard disk space. AND....It gets a bit trickier to restore the default Privacy settings, if you have used a custom privacy settings XML file for added protection. Have a look at the procedure in MSKB article, How to Restore Default Settings After Importing Custom Privacy Preferences. If you do not want to meddle with the registry manually, use a registry file as outlined here to restore default privacy settings.

It is still acting a bit ornery in that whilst I AM CONNECTED I can send and receive emails...IE most often says "the page cannot be displayed" but after a reboot it is ok for the first time anyway

Have been there previously Pete but will go again if things don't work out.

Just had a reasonably good run and with no blanks..thought I was on a self remedying winner but it came to a stop and wouldn't connect.

I'll just keep at it...real time waster.

Hi guys, after going through a number of recommended processes as well as uninstalling my recent SP3 installation and IE7 also unchecking all startup programs I have consistently come up with this issue which I have posted in a new post......... "Page not Found" error after surfing for an estimated period of 5 minutes..... so we can consider this one closed I'd reckon and maybe se you on my more recent issue.

    Thanks
