IMO it is an excellent program which I use occasionally although at first sight the amount of detail presented is rather daunting.

To control my startups I use Starter which really only covers startup items associated with installed software, but which is more than adequate for general usage and unlikely to cause any issues with OS based startup items.

It's a great utility, been using it for years. It's esp useful in tracking down undesirable drivers and malware rootkits.

    Thanks for the replies.

I was particularly interested in the program as a way to get better control of what starts up each time I boot up. For several years I've been using StartupCop, but there are so many items listed that I can't tell what they are, I was looking for something to replace it. Is Starter better for that, or is AutoRuns for Windows? And is there any advantage to having more than one utility for that, or disadvantage?

Give Starter a try - it is far less complicated than Autoruns and IMO unlikely to cause you any grief whereas Autoruns could as it goes into the core of the OS as well as installed programs. I have at least 3 such programs loaded - Starter, Autoruns & Mike Lin's Startup control Panel, but only use Starter.

That said I also run WinPatrol which includes control of Start up items with a very useful facility of setting delayed startup times. For example I have Outlook Express start automatically 30 secs after boot.

I downloaded and installed Starter without any problems. It showed fewer programs automatically starting than I expected, and I disabled 2 of them. So far so good. Thanks for the tip.

    I always trust PCWorld

I love PCWorld. The information they put out has not lead me wrong yet. If that isn't reason enough ... I've always done autorun. My opinion is 'it's good'.
On another note, just a friendly tip ... had a data/photo tragedy recently & thanks to some excellent data recovery software, my life is worth living again (extreme, but you know what I mean). I felt obligated to share.
    Cheers
