Whenever I try to print I get a message that says the Printer Spooler Service is not running.

Check that the Service is set to Automatic ....

Right click My Computer icon >Manage > Services - Print Spooler in right hand list.

Double click on it and in the dialogue box which opens check that the startup type is Automatic. If not set it to Automatic.

Check the Service status and if it is stopped - hit the Start button.

If it fails to start check that the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is started - Print Spooler Service depends on this.

If the above fails to get the Print Spooler Service started note any error messages and post them here.

I've followed your instructions; but the problem is still there. Where do I look for error messages?

Would you please post your findings - were the Services stopped or started. I had anticipated that you might have received an error message when attempting to start one of the services if they were not already started.

The other source of error messages is Event Viewer - Right click My Computer icon > Manage > Event Viewer. Look for events flagged red or yellow coinciding with the time you tried to print. Double clicking on an event opens it - clicking on the icon below the up down arrows copies to clipboard so that you can paste here.

In the meantime I will dig deeper.

    The Services were started.

The Event Viewer under the Anti Virus section shows quite a few of the following (but the times do not coincide with the times I tried to print):

    Event Type: Warning

    Event Source: avast!
    Event Category: Client
    Event ID: 90
    Date: 30/11/2008
    Time: 19:55:30
    User: N/A
    Computer:
    Description:
    AAVM - scanning warning: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx [UNI]: C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\PRINTERS\00003.SHD (C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\PRINTERS\00003.SHD) returning error, 00000005.

I've also recently discovered that a printer related file was on the blacklist of my antispyware, I've since moved it to the white list. Now I can print word and PDF documents; but I still cannot print from the web.

Ah, some progress and good sleuthing on your part - sneaky antispyware :)

    Which Browser are you using - IE6, 7, 8 or .....

For IE try disabling all add-ons, either through tools > Manage add-ons and disable all and if you are then able to print re-enable them one by one, testing after each re-enable until the culprit is found.

A quicker route in 7 & 8 is to right click the IE desktop icon > Start without add-ons.

    For 6 - I don't have a copy any longer I think the Tools > Manage Add-ons exists, but it's been a long time since I used 6.

BTW the Avast error code is fairly generic, but there are suggestions that it implies 'Access denied' or the file in use.

After further research I came across a thread in which the poster had the same problem as you have - can print from Word, but not the web.

Would you check and see if you have this file on your system ....

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\fservice.exe
