I have Netscape 4.76. Since Netscape Bites I don't use it very much. When I do, I keep having a problem. If I have a window open, them right click to open another one, just the frame around the sides opens and you see the same middle part of the window of window #1. It will act like it's trying to load, but never does. It does not do this all the time, but for sure when I have several open. I know that even when it's running at it's best, Netscape *****, but what could I do to fix this? Thank you, Chris.

You could try using Netscape 4.79, it's not quite up to the standards of you Opera users but might fix your problem.

    Hi Chris,

Do you have Java enabled? If so, uncheck Enabled Java and Enable Java Script, see if this eliminates the hang.

    Also, the basic maintenance tasks:
Empty your Cache folder, including the fat.db file
    Delete the netscape.hst file

    These files/folder are located in
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername

Let us know if you continue to have problems!

    Chris,

Download 4.79 from this site, and doubt that you will have problems:

    http://sillydog.org/narchive/

You can also get Netscape 6.2.1 at this site, but there are system requirements that you will need to meet:

Windows 95, 98, or 98SE, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
Intel Pentium-class 233 MHz (or faster) processor
    64 MB RAM
26 MB of free hard disk space

If you decide to try Netscape 6.2.1, I would strongly recommend keeping 4.76 installed. Also, backing up your User profile before installing 6.2.1.

The Mail in 6.2.1 is very unstable, so you may want to try the Stand Alone Version, which is only 8.58 MB.

Did any of the suggested solutions work for 4.76?

    Keep us posted.

    Ramona

    I disabled java and I went to try it out. Instead of the page I wanted, I got this;

"In order to provide the best experience possible to the greatest
amount of users, ESPN.com makes extensive use of
Javascript/JScript throughout our site. You appear to have
Javascript/JScript disabled in your browser, and thus, your
experience at ESPN.com may be less than optimal. We
recommend opening 'Preferences' or 'Internet Options' in your
browser and enabling Javascript/JScript before proceeding. "

I clicked on the site anyway. It was all messed up. I couldn't even read anything. It was a mess. Looked like someone spalshed paint blobs on screeen.
I downloaded the brower from Netscape site. I got it on my computer, it just doesn't run when I click on it. If I download it from another site, I will then have the same download I allready have, persumabe with the same problem. If it's different, what do they to to there Netscape that Netscape doesn't do? Maybe spyware or a branded browser? If it's the same, same problem. If it's diferent, it's not the real NS 4.79.
Without any of this, netscape at it's very best, it still isn't even close to ie. It's sad to think that these jokers blame Micrsoft for there problems.

    Hi Chris,

I went to the ESPN site, opened 5 windows, trying to recreate what you described. No problems.

Yes, if the site requires Java/Java Script to be enabled, you would see skewed pages, with J/JS disabled. It sometimes helps to enable/disable them.

I would suggest you do a complete uninstall, and a "Clean" install. This link has instructions on how:

    Performing a "Clean" Install

Post back and let us know if this helps.

That message only appears if you have disabled javascript. Unfortunately, disabling javascript also disables style sheets, which causes the page to display poorly. It is still readable with javascript and style sheets disable, but not a site you would wish to take time to read.

If you enable javascript and style sheets (edit/prefs/advanced) you should get a much improved page display. It might not be perfect, as the page is designed with IE in mind, but it does appear to be laid out properly.

If I do a clean install, won't I still have the same file to try and exacute? It won't do that now.
I can try it, but it seems that if I download sd_cc 32d4 79.exe (I think that's the one, or close to it.) and it's sitting in "my downloaded files" and will not exacute, if I do a clean install and have the same file to try to open, what's the difference?

    Chris,

Your download must be corrupt, if the 4.79 execute file does nothing when you double click.

Are you using a third-party download manager? If so, that could be your problem.

    Another thought/s:

Did you download the file to an empty folder, or a folder other than your Netscape folder?

Do a "Find" for *.tmp Delete all files that are found.

Disable all TSR's, especially your virus scanner.

    Chris,

I would suggest the Base download, and a "Custom" install.

I would strongly recommend not using Smart Download. It really isn't necessary.

Look here for for the Installation Options. You can then make your decision based on the features you want.
