    Hello
I am trying to create printed labels from an Excel database.
I perform all the steps in the Word wizard right up to arranging my label
( First name, Last name, Address, etc).
Then when click on "Update all labels ", only the first two are updated to show the choisen arrangement. All the remaining cells in the table show "Next Record "
I then click on "Complete the merge" and only the first recipeint shows in the table.
If I scroll through the recipients in the wizard, they appear individually in the first label space in the table.
What SHOULD happen is that all the recipients are shown in their individual spaces in the table, which can then be printed out onto labels.
If I print, I only get the first one as shown on the grid.

Can anyone help me achieve this last step in the wizard, please?

    Thanks in advance

What versions of word and Excel are you using?
What is the label layout style you selected?
Did you install a template from the label manufacturer?

Are you wortking from a previously saved merged document?
Has anything recently been changed in the system?

    Label merging

    Thannks Bilbo.
    I am using Word 2002 (10.2627.2625) and Excel 2002 ( 10,2614.2625)

I put in my own lablel configuration to match labels I bought. But I've tried with other configurations ( eg Avery standard) and there is no difference.

The Excel list I'm using has been successfully merged before and I've recently updated it with some additions/deletions/changes to individual addresses.

I recently had my computer "cleaned" - hard drive reformatted and software re-installed, etc, but it's the same software as was previously installed and I was able to do it before.

On a friend's computer, the list merges OK. I can't understand why mine won't let it.

There is something different about the various merge versions in Word, and I can't remember when the change took place, but the change has to do with the very last step, being when you actually look at the merged document.

I seem to recall that word 2002 (and later versions) were different from word 2000, but it now seems possible word 2002 was the last for that method and word 2003 implemented the change.

"Update all labels" simply looks to the data source and updates values shown in the merged document.

I think the key may be your second record being shown. In theory, the PRE-MERGED document should also show the <NEXT RECORD> value also for the second record.

Thanks for that observation. You would think that Word 2002 and Excel 2002 would talk to one another, but that appears not to be the case.
I will contact Microsoft, but my experience is that they are good at gobbledegook and not much help.
Anyway, thanks for trying - if you think of anything else, please let me know.
    Cheers

I assure you the problem is not Excel. Word and Excel are talking to each other just fine.

The problem is with the layout in Word, not Excel.

This reminds me of an old joke, please forgive me if you've heard it before:

A helicopter was flying around above Seattle when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft's electronic navigation and communications equipment.

Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, and held up a handwritten sign that said "WHERE AM I?" in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER."

The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to SEATAC airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the copilot asked the pilot how he had done it.

"I knew it had to be the Microsoft Building, because they gave me a technically correct but completely useless answer. "

I follow the wizard prompts. Is there another method?
