I needed to go back to WEP from WAP because one of the computers on the wifi (PS3 running LINUX) does not know WAP. All went well except for one notebook (Sony VAIO) running SP3. I cannot find a way (short of total reinstall) to force this machine to go back to WEP. It insists that my network is WAP.

You will have to remove the existing connection and set up a new one:
    1. Remove the existing one:
If you’re using WZC to connect, right-click the Wireless Network Connection icon in the notification area, then click View Available Wireless Networks. Under Preferred networks, click the wireless network that you want to remove then click Remove

    OR

If you’re using the adapter’s software, it will be similar to right-clicking the Signal icon > Open utility > Wireless Networks Tab. Highlight the one not wanted and click Remove.

    2. Then create it again:
Right-click the wireless network icon in the system tray and then click View Available Wireless Networks. Click (or type) the network name you want to connect to and click Connect (bottom right). Now type your WEP key and click Connect

    OR

Using the adapter’s software, right-click the wireless network adapter’s icon in the system tray, open it and follow the prompts to connect. The software varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Perhaps you should try uninstalling/reinstalling the wireless adapter in Device Manager.

Is it that the wifi adapter itself on the PS3 does not support WPA or that you just don't know how to setup WPA on Linux? Most older wifi adapters (80211.b) only support WEP, but many have updated drivers or firmware that adds WPA support. And WPA can be setup easily in Linux using the wpa-supplicant package.

I use YDL and it does not have the appropriate libraries compiled (PPC). Even getting it work in WEP environment was not that easy. But you are probably right in saying I do not know - or more appropriately, I am too lazy to build it from sources on a PS3 game console.

Thank you. Been there before I came here - does not work for me, period. (YDL 6.0, all up-to-date). I do not game and use WPA only because it is slightly more secure than WEP. I do have 2 real :) unixes (AIX) , couple of OS/Xs and some wintel. I only get problem with the PS3 YDL, in the game mode it works just fine. In the linux mode I did not get the WPA and I also did not get BT working.

Yeah, I figured you saw that reference already.
Anyway, you would have to probably build from source to get WPA working.
(that's why I use debian, much easier to get a system built up just the way you want)

The funniest thing: I discovered that my router (Apple Extreme Base Station) advertises the network as WPA even though it is WEP. The computer in question gets confused, all the other ones just deal with it.

Try "closing" the wlan and disabling ssid broadcast & see what happens.

Not unless someone else has the same problem. It has taken too much time already - yours, mine, everyone who helped.
