Cannot get rid of AVG startup file initiation

I used to have AVG running on my ThinkPad laptop running Windows 98. I removed it, but the uninstall option was not available so I deleted all the files.

Now whenever the laptop boots up, it looks for the AVG files and gives me a message when it cannot find them. I cannot figure out how to stop it from looking for those files. Any suggestions?

 

Question is how did you manage to get it to install on Windows 98? I tried it yesterday and it said I didn't have the correct operating system (XP). This is version 8. something.

So far I'm not having any luck finding a virus or malware program for Windows 98. Other than MicroTrend's housecall on-line virus scanner.

It's great for cleaning up unwanted junk on the hardrive, fixing registry errors and junk startup programs that run in the system tray and eat up memory like Apple's Quicktime player.

When you run it, first run the registry cleaner to see if it will fix the problem. If that doesn't do it, then goto "Startup" under "Tools" and you might see something that pertains to "AVG ". just select it and remove it.

 

Those calls are probably in your autoexec.bat files in C:\

Using notepad edit this file and put REM before any lines referencing AVG, note add a space after the REM.

 

I suggest reinstalling AVG (from the original installer, if possible), then uninstalling it again.

 

If you mean the message 'cannot find system file' then names the file, you press Enter to continue, and you get another message concerning another file, and you press Enter to continue, getting real tedious in the meantime, I know just what you need to do.
If you feel comfortable editing the registry, do this. Write down the names of the files when booting the computer. Go to Start\Run type in 'regedit' and press Enter.
In the Registry Editor, on the left side, navigate to this Key (or folder, that is what they will look like).
Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD
Under that Key (folder) you will find the names of the files listed as folders under VXD. Delete the names that you have written down. Be sure as when you delete anything here, it DOES NOT go into the Recycle Bin. It is gone.
This will all be done on the left side, you do not need to do anything on the right side of the Registry Editor.
If something does go wrong, you can boot to the Dos Prompt, type in 'scanreg /restore' and use a backup registry to get you going again.

Avast will work on Windows 98, there is not too many left that will work..

I did not list AVGFree because I understand version 7.5 will not get definiton updates after this year and version 8.0 will not work with 98/ME
