I currently run NS 6.2.3 and plan to upgrade to NS7. Before I upgrade I would like to uninstall a 4.7 browser. HOw do I uninstall 4.7 without causing problems with the NS 6.2.3?

    Hi leftysjl,

Is Netscape 6.2.3 your default browser?

Assuming that it is, and with Netscape closed:

Back up your 6.2.3 Profile located in:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
    or
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

    depending on your OS.

Remove Netscape Communicator, using the Add/Remove applet:
    Start|Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove

Delete the nsreg.dat, and netscape.ini files. You can either do a "Find" for them, or locate them in C:\Windows.

    Delete the following folders:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator folder
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users Folder.

    Reboot

If you're overdue for ScanDisk and Defrag, now is a good time.

The uninstall should create no problems with Netscape 6.2.3.

If Communicator is your default browser, then there would obviously be different steps. Post back and let us know.

I have a guideline for a "Clean" unstall/install of Netscape 6/7, if you would like to take a look at it before upgrading.

Post back if you have more questions.

    Thanks,
That works just fine. Odd, the only program that shows in the ADD/Remove applet was for 6.2. I just went ahead and followed the rest of your instructions. Icons and shortcuts (that no longer function) still exist, but I imagine all I need to do is delete these and that should be the end to 4.7 Are there any registry keys that should also be removed?

I've printed your 6/7 clean install instructions and plan to use them when I finally get the NS7 CD in the mail.

    Hi leftysjl,

You mean, as opposed to 6.2.3? Yes, Netscape sometimes does that, and why I don't know.

Yes, you can safely delete the icons and shortcuts.

There are Registry keys you can delete, but it would be very easy to delete 6.2.3 keys. If you do decide to edit the Registry, by all means make a backup first:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Netscape.Network.1
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Netscape.Registry.1
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Netscape.TalkNav.1
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\NetscapeMarkup
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Netscape\Netscape Navigator

I'm usually a little hesitant to add these unless the user is experienced.

I also have a page showing screen shots of a "Custom" install of Netscape 7.0. You may not need this, as you seem to be experienced:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee65/index5.html

I just posted a link for an updated "Compact" Version of 7.0 :
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?threadid=8787

This is a 13.1 MB download, if you're interested.
