One of my laptops has stopped connecting the the internet. In the bottom right corner it says it is connected with an excellent 11mps signal but the signal isn't moving. I've tried to repair it but it won't repair because it can't restore the ip address. The address on this laptop is not even close to the network address and when I try to change it, it still won't work. I try to disconnect from the network but it re-connects by itself even though it is a secured network. I'm a novice at networking and have been lucky so far with the other two laptops working fine. My main computer is connected via cable modem and the others to it through a wireless router.
    Any help is appreciated.

    This often works:

Go to Control Panel > Classic View > Network and Sharing Center > View Status alongside the Wireless Connection > Properties at the bottom > Network Tab and scroll down to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and double-click it. In the General Tab put dots in "˜Obtain an IP address automatically’ and in "˜Obtain DNS server address automatically’. OK, etc. Repeat it for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).

Go to the Windows Orb (Start) > All Programs > Accessories and right-click Command Prompt, then "˜Run as Administrator’. Type netsh winsock reset (note the two spaces) and press Enter. Shut down the computer.

Switch off and unplug the router/modem. Wait five minutes, plug it back in and when the lights stabilise, restart the computer.

thanks for the info. I'm using xp but most of the info was the same. It only worked for less than a minute, then its back to the same old stuff. I don't know whats next. It just won't connect to the internet. The other computers on the network work fine. Something internal?

Sorry about that, I don’t know what made me think you were using Vista.

    Try this:
Restart the computer and start tapping the F8 key. When the boot menu appears, select Safe Mode with Networking. Has it connected to the internet?

If it has, restart in Normal Mode and temporarily UNINSTALL the antivirus and disable the firewall. Then check the result.

If it still hasn’t connected, try the steps here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/troubleshoot.mspx and here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892896

Thank you. It worked. Now on to the latest problem. My other desktop has 'limited or no connectivity' Speed at 54mpbs as opposed to 11.0. The microsoft website doesn't help. AND the ip address is way different than the other computers of the network. Any ideas?

I’m glad one of the machines is sorted out.

Now, on the other one, when you run ipconfig /all, are you getting an IP address of 169.254.n.n?

If so, it’s because the NIC hasn't got its IP address from the router and Windows has defaulted to allocating an APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing), that is one in the dreaded 169.254.n.n range. This will give the "˜Limited or No Connectivity’ message and won't let you connect to the internet. It could be that Winsock is corrupted, this link may solve it http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811259
