Not really sure if this is the right place to post this. If it isn't please move. I am not quite sure where it should go.

There is a rather strange problem with the puter my wife uses and she told me I should fix it, or get her a new one. I had told her it was a security thing so someone would not get into her computer unless they were shown how. Unfortunately someone told her different.

The problem has been around for years, but I did not want to loose certain information by reformatting the HD. I just found a way to overcome it.

When the computer is started, or restarted the mouse will not work until the system goes into suspension and revived. When it comes out everything is fine.

Last week I formatted the HD and installed the OS. While I was updating the system and installing things the mouse worked as it should. As soon as I installed the driver for the built in network adapter the mouse quit working on startup.

Back to putting the puter into suspension before using the mouse.

This is what I have found out.

-If I let the computer go into standby the mouse will not work when revived.

-If I put the computer into standby and bring it out the mouse works.

-If I uninstall the network driver before shutting down, the mouse will work on next start, and the network will reinstall and work.

-If I disable the network before shutting down, the mouse will work on next start. I can enable the network and all is well.

I have all the updates installed. I have tried all the drivers I can find for my network. I have updated to the latest BIOS available.

This is what is installed in the box.

OS: Win2K with SP4 and all updates installed.

    Motherboard: Asus TUSI-M

    CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(TM)1200MHz

    Memory: 512 MB

Bios : Award Software, Inc. -latest version for this MB has been installed.

    Chipset : SiS 630
    NorthBridge : SiS 630
SouthBridge : SiS PCI to ISA Bridge (LPC Bridge)

Network Card : Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) SiS900 10/100 Ethernet Adapter
    Input/Output Range: D400 - D4FF
    Memory Range: EB800000 - EB800FFF
    Interrupt Request: 09

    Mouse -Installed on IRQ 12

I have done lots of searching and I have not found anything that pertains to this problem.

I am at a lost of what to try next.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Welcome to WindowsBBS keytone :)

I'm not going to be much help here, but I have one question/suggestion. Have you tried changing around the IRQ arrangenment for mouse and NIC?

I'm going to re-adjust the title and move this to the hardware forum, where I think you might get more views by folks geared toward such problems.

Do you let Windows install the drivers for the mouse or do you have a drivers (and software) CD for it and run that?

    Hi mattman

I think I should have explained the mouse I am using right now is a Logitech wireless mouse. When I first started using it with the last install of Win2k I installed the drivers that came with it. I am sure everything was OK at the time. Like I said I am not really sure when this problem started.

I tried an ordinary wired mouse, but it does the same thing.

So far with this install I have let windows install the mouse driver.

I might be all wet, but I think if I could get the mouse driver to install before the network card things would be OK.

Do you know if there is a way to change the order the drivers load. I have been looking for a file that does this, but so far nothing looks good.

I do not have the original anymore, but I am sure I could download them if needed.

Look at any programs that might be running in the background that may have an influence. I hope you don't have Comet Cursors .

Boot into Safe Mode and see how it works there.

I thought Dave's suggestion of changing resources might be worth trying, but I can't see that the resources can be changed for the mouse and on this system the network resources are locked.

If it worked correctly before and you have tried drivers, etc, look at some sort of outside influence. Making the network drivers load after the mouse sounds like a very big workaround for something that should be basic.

PS, in the BIOS, look for the setting Plug and Play OS. Set this to No.

    Hi mattman

I checked programs running and I didn't see anything unusual. I keep an eye on what is running on my systems and look up anything I don't recognize, and I don't run these fancy add ons that tend to slow things down.

The Safe Mode was a good idea and had not tried it before, unfortunately I have no mouse movement in Safe Mode and I can not put the puter into "standby" from the Safe Mode.

I can find no way to change the IRQ for ether the mouse, or the network card.

I did go into BIOS and changed the Plug and Play OS to no -did nothing. While I was there I set the IRQ for the mouse to 12, and the network to 9.
    This did not help.

I am not sure how the loading of drivers is handled. I was thinking if it was by some file that could be edited I would just move the loading of the mouse driver so it loads before the network driver. Maybe an e-mail to Microsoft would shed some light on such a file.

I did find a log file that I could sort of see the order drivers were installed and when the network driver got installed after the mouse driver the mouse worded. This does not explain why the mouse works after putting the computer in "suspension" and bringing it out.

I am not completely whipped yet. If I can find not way to change the driver install order I will disable the built in network and install a PCI network card, and failing that I will install Ubuntu on it and turn it into a file storage machine.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I am still open to trying anything else.

    Thanks

...And then chop it into tiny pieces :D

You might be able to do something with Hardware Profiles, but I am not sure what. I think I have come across something similar in the past and I started looking for the same kind of workaround, but it turned out to be a driver issue in the end.

Try booting into Safe Mode to uninstall the relevant drivers and software. Look at related drivers, like the mouse will be connected through the USB port. Upper level drivers, look for updated chipset drivers, first at Asus, no luck, look on the SiS website. Something unrelated...graphics are resource hungry.

I still feel you are trying to fix the symptoms and not the cause of the problem.

I used to be afraid of making changes, now I don't stand around wondering what might be the problem. Drivers and software come flying out of the machine until I can find the cause :) (they can always be reinstalled).

I hunted around a bit and found that there is a setting I can activate for my mouse which is: "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power ".

    I navigated to this by:
    Control Panel
    >> Mouse
    >> Hardware Tab
    >> Properties Button
    >> Power Management Tab
I'm sure there's about 1000 other ways to get to the same setting.

This seemed applicable since you mentioned that it works after returning from standby. Maybe something is triggering the power save mode for the mouse?
